I love a national day, and today might be my favourite so far this year - it's National Bubble Wrap Day!

For those of you that use bubble wrap for packing then today is the day to dig it out and throw it a party!

I personally love popping every little air pocket, one by one, sometimes in a big clump. Whichever way, the stress relief it brings is wonderful.

So today, or any day in fact, when you feel life is becoming just a little overwhelming but time pressures mean you can't stop for long, look for the simple stress relievers that you can do at your desk.

Enjoy 😁

Are there positives of burnout?
I was at a strategy networking meeting last night when a colleague asked me if I felt there were any positives to burnout. This really made me stop and think. My immediate reaction was "absolutely not". Now I've had to think about it however, actually I would say "absolutely yes". I just wish it hadn't taken burnout for me to make changes in my life to find them.
So what are the positives that I have found?
1 I have left a job that I was desperately unhappy in, even if I was good at it.
2 I can take my children to school and pick them up every day. No more wrap around care and arguing to get out of the door.
3 I don't have the Sunday night dread of Monday morning.
4 I sleep. Simple as that.
5 I no longer tell myself that I am less than anyone else.
6 I laugh. I mean really laugh. Not the empty hollow laugh to put on a front.
7 I like myself.
8 My physical health has improved along with my mental health.
9 I am now 'purposefully' busy, not overwhelmed busy.
10 I am happy.

So although it may sound strange, I am grateful that I hit the wall and had to stop. It has changed my life.

A bit of fun – National Belly Laugh Day - 24th January
The scientific field of studying the effects of laughter is called gelotology, and studies have shown the importance of laughter to human communication and relationships.
Laughter lift spirits, alleviates stress and increases positivity. You can even attend laughter yoga classes! Across the year there are several laughter days including World Laughter Day in May.
A belly laugh is the greatest of all laughs. It is loud, hearty and often infectious.
So today is the day to have a good belly laugh and enjoy the benefits it brings.
- It stimulates endorphins which act as a natural painkiller.
- Laughter reduces stress and creates a feeling of relaxation. It improves mood and gives a heightened sense of well-being.
- It can improve your immune system. Positive thoughts can increase the neuropeptides that protect the body from illness and disease.
- Laughter can encourage the blood vessels to expand allowing increased blood flow which makes us healthier.
Here’s to the power of laughter!

Let's talk about burnout.
Last week Jacinda Ardern, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, resigned stating burnout as the reason for her decision.
I applaud her for having the courage to speak so publicly about her struggles. I, of course, would never even begin to compare the pressures and stresses I faced to those of a political leader on the world stage, but I do understand the debilitating symptoms of a condition that is often jeered at as an excuse for someone who just can't 'hack the pace'.
In 2019, 'burnout' was recognised by WHO as an 'occupational phenomenon. (mentalhealth-uk.org
). 1 in 5 workers in the UK felt unable to manage pressure and stress levels at work. Add to this the juggle that is running a household and bringing up children. No wonder mental health conditions are on the rise. And yet, we still insist on pushing on through - because that's what we do. Right?
Wrong. We need to stop and take our mind and bodies seriously. Burnout does not fix itself with a few early nights and some social events. It systematically gets worse until our bodies, in some way, force us to stop.
Burnout occurs when we are physically and emotionally exhausted and is often mistaken for anxiety.
Common signs include :
Feeling tired most of time
Feeling helpless and trapped
Feeling detached and alone
Feeling negative towards things we used to enjoy
Self-doubt and low self-esteem
Procrastinating and taking longer to get tasks done
Feeling overwhelmed.
Gender plays a role with burnout. Women are reportedly more likely to suffer than men, however I wonder if this is more due to the fact that women are more likely to speak out than men. Afterall, burnout is often misunderstood and stigmatised.
So what can you do if you think you are suffering from burnout?
Firstly, see your GP. It's important to rule out any underlying physical or mental health conditions (other than burnout) that could be causing your symptoms.
Seek support - reach out those around you. Tell them how you feel. Also look to see if your employer has an assistance programme, and make use of it. It is there for a reason.
Try relaxing activities - programmes that help with stress such as yoga, meditation and mindfulness can give you space to breathe.
Exercise - as with many mental health conditions, regular physical activity helps you to deal with stress and also gives you a break from thinking about work or home pressures.
Try to sleep more - sleep restores well-being and protects your health.
Evaluate your options - what needs to change at work or home? Who or what can help to alleviate your stress, pressures and worries? How can you make these changes?
If you spot the signs of burnout early, seek support and make some changes, it is possible to find relief and positivity again.

Do you ever feel that 'guilt' when you want to have a life away from your children or partner? I do.
In March I'm going to Lisbon for four days with my best friend and then a few days later I'm heading to a friend's 20th wedding anniversary party. And guess what - I felt I needed to ask for permission to go. Why? Because the inner guilt of putting myself above my family was just so loud, I couldn't drown it out.
But the good news is, over the last few years I have worked hard at reprogramming myself to believe that I am allowed to have time for me. I am entitled to be Phillipa, the woman, rather than the mother and wife.
You can do this too. You can find the inner reroute button. You can have Time For Life.
My new 'Time For Life' coaching programme will be available soon to help you prioritise you and your goals, as well as still being the wonderful partner / parent that you already are!
If you would like to get in touch and find out more please do send me a message. I'd love to hear from you.

5 simple ways to challenge yourself in 2023.

Not into New Year Resolutions (like me!) but equally want to SOMETHING different in 2023? You can feel the satisfaction of achievement without having to commit to big changes.

Here are five challenges that you can set yourself to give your brain that craved for stimulation.

1 Drop the guilt. You are allowed time for you each day to breathe. Go for a walk, read a chapter of a book, phone a friend. Give yourself 10 minutes a day to just ‘be’.

2 Watch TED talks. There are talks for every interest to inspire and challenge.

3 Listen to podcasts. As with TED talks, you will find a plethora of choices to grab your attention.

4 Hire a life coach. Extravagant during a cost of living crisis? Not necessarily. Life coaching gives you the tools to prioritise the things you really want or need and helps you to plan how to get them. Give it a try!

5 Practise Gratitude. Yes, really. Find five things each day you are grateful for. Gratitude for the little things is a powerful tool. It gives positivity, supports mental wellbeing and changes how you view the world.

“There is only one thing more precious than time and that’s who we spend it on.” Leo Christopher.

Make sure you spend some of it on you!
