Erasmus has made nine changes to the side that defeated the Wallabies in Perth for the first Test against the All Blacks in South Africa. Wiese returns from suspension, while Pieter-Steph du Toit and Ruan Nortje form a new second-row partnership due to injuries to six other locks.

Despite these changes, the match-day squad shows only three changes from the team that won 33-7 in Brisbane, with two of those changes forced by injuries to locks Eben Etzebeth and Salmaan Moerat. Aphelele Fassi takes over at full-back from Willie le Roux in the only other change. RG Snyman, Franco Mostert, Lood de Jager, and Jean Kleyn are also unavailable due to injury.

Salmaan Moerat will lead the team as captain from the lock position, replacing regular captain Siya Kolisi, who is one of nine players from Saturday's 33-7 win to be rested. The only players to retain their starting positions are Cheslin Kolbe (wing), Jesse Kriel (centre), Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu (fly-half), Elrigh Louw (number 8), and Pieter-Steph du Toit, who switches from lock to flanker.
