I used to believe that a good relationship wouldn’t involve hard conversations.

That conflict was a sign something was wrong. That the right people would just get along.

It took me a long time to realise it’s the opposite. Someone wanting to have a hard conversation with you is an act of love.

In my book, I explore how to actually have these difficult conversations, and I dismantle a lot of the myths most of us were taught about relationships.

At its core, social anxiety is about shame and the fear that you will be exposed as “not good enough”.

Something I talk about in my new book is how to start showing up as your authentic self and create those safe connections.

The mask you created as a child to feel accepted is often the same thing keeping you from real closeness today.

As kids, many of us learned that being fully ourselves wasn’t safe. So we built a version that was easier to love. The agreeable one. The strong one. The one who never needed too much.

I talk about this in my book, and how to start connecting with people from a place of real authenticity instead.

For most of my life, I thought being honest meant saying how I felt the moment I felt it.

If something hurt me, I’d want to address it immediately. Waiting felt almost dishonest, like I was suppressing myself.

Something I explore in my book is how common this is for anxiously attached people.

When you fear abandonment, an unresolved feeling doesn’t just feel uncomfortable, it feels threatening.

So the urge to say it, fix it, resolve it right now becomes overwhelming.

But the urgency isn’t truth. It’s dysregulation.

Research shows that anxiety is caused by your inability to tolerate uncertainty.

I write about how I overcame my anxious attachment style in my book and about how others can do too.

As a result of the loneliness epidemic we place much more pressure on our romantic relationships.

That’s why social connection is so important - developing strong bonds with friends, family, and communities.

While researching my new book, I came across three surprising studies that changed the way I think about human connection.

The first showed that warmth makes people like you one-on-one, but the people who are liked by everyone they meet combine that warmth with confidence.

The second showed that most of us talk less than we should, because the more people shared in a conversation with a stranger, the more they were liked.

The third is my favourite. It found that simply expecting to be accepted makes us act warmer, and that warmth is what makes people accept us.

As someone who spent years being the quiet one in the room, these findings meant a lot to me, because they show that connection comes down to things we can all practise.
