Managers how to land your message.Part of building a solid reputation is making sure that when you do speak, your point actually lands. Whether you are pitching an idea to a counterpart or giving feedback to your own team, you have to read the room. If you want your point to stick, ask yourself: What makes this specific person tick?
Think about a football manager. They work with an entire team of coaches, doctors, analysts, and scouts. They know the gaps in their own knowledge, and they realize they simply cannot do everything. They hire experts, set the direction, and then trust them to get on with delivering it. Your team is there to do a job. Use their skills, empower them, and let them get on with it. If you don’t have time to delegate, you need to completely reevaluate what you are doing. Your number one job is to develop people.
Are you a manager and struggle with or avoid making decisions. Here’s a 4 point checklist that can help.
Managers, focus on what you can control. When you are trying to make a good impression, you have to focus ruthlessly on what you can actually control. You cannot control whether people “like” you. You cannot control how they interpret your work. So, do not judge the success of an interaction by whether the other person smiled and agreed with you. If you prepared well, if you are happy with how you approached the problem, and you are proud of what you said and how you said it, that has to be good enough.
