Ageing happens whether you prepare for it or not. But you can influence the speed of it, through your choices. By protecting your capability!

Most people wait until something breaks, a fall, a diagnosis, a moment they can't do something they used to. By then, you're playing catch-up instead of staying ahead.

5 things that actually protect you as you age.

None of this needs to be perfect. You just need to start where you are.

Try this. Stand on one leg. Time yourself. See how long you last.

Balance is your inner ear, the nerves in your feet and joints, your eyes, all talking to your nervous system at once. And your nervous system takes all of that and fires the right muscles, in the right order, fast enough that you never even notice it happening.

That's the part that actually slows down as we age. The whole communication system. Nerve signals get slower. Reaction time drops. The thing that's supposed to catch you starts arriving a beat too late.

Here's the uncomfortable part. There's a study, British Journal of Sports Medicine, that followed 1,700 adults for 7 years. People who couldn't hold that position for 10 seconds had an 84% higher risk of dying.

I know how that sounds. It's not really about the balance itself.

Falls are the obvious risk. But the real story is underneath that, reaction time, coordination, how fast your body responds when a curb shows up out of nowhere, or a kid runs into your legs.

This is correlation, not causation. But the pattern holds across the research.

Balance is trainable. Most people just never bother.

So if your 10 seconds felt shaky, don't panic. That's just information to get you started.

When you are travelling or on holiday with family, this is when you need the capability the most.

Breakfast eaten standing up, with one arm, while two kids run in opposite directions.

Nobody warns you about this part. Not the exhaustion. The physical demand of it.

This is the season of life where fitness actually matters. Not for how you look in photos. For keeping up on the fourth day of a trip. For carrying a toddler up steps that weren't built for buggies. For having the patience left at 6pm because your body isn't the thing running out first.

Capable isn't a personality trait. It's built, on purpose, before you need it.

Three kids. Every country we've taken them to. I want them to grow up used to seeing the world, not watching it from a stroller because I couldn't keep up.

That's what I train for. Not for the mirror. The memories with my family.

12 reasons to exercise, and none of them are about how you look.

The muscle loss. The bone density. The fact that moving your body does what antidepressants are designed to do. This is what's actually happening in your body, whether you're paying attention to it or not.

None of this is about aesthetics. It's about whether you can still do the things you love, for decades, not just this year.

That's capability. Not fitness. Capability.

Swipe through. See which one actually changes something for you.

I've been a gymnast, a trader, a mother of three, and a yoga teacher. Four completely different lives. But they all taught me the same thing: your body is either working for you, or it's quietly working against you.

I don't really care about fitness. I care about capability. Whether you can still get up off the floor. Still carry your own kids. Still say yes to the things you actually want to do, not just the things your body can currently handle.

That's what I'm building here. Not another account about how to look better. A different question entirely: not how do you look, but what can you still do.

I've spent most of my life refusing to accept "that's just how it is." Twenty years searching for real answers to a health issue instead of just living with it. Leaving a career that never fit the life I actually wanted. Three kids, three home births, years of rebuilding my body from scratch, more than once.

Strength was never the goal for me. Freedom was. Capability is just how you protect it.

If you're here to look a certain way, this probably isn't for you. If you want to still be strong, capable, and free in your own body decades from now, I'm glad you're here. Follow along. This is just the start.

Try this: cross your legs, lower yourself all the way to the ground, then stand back up. No hands.

Harder than it sounds, right?

This is a movement every human should be able to do. Not an athlete. Not someone who trains five times a week. Every human.

But most of us lose it. Quietly, over years of chairs, desks, and sofas, without ever noticing the floor became somewhere we used to go.

I think about this a lot. Capability isn't really about the gym. It's about the freedom to move through your own life without your body holding you back.

This one simple move checks your strength, balance, and mobility, all at once. Most people never think to check.

So I'm making it a regular thing here.

Try it now, and follow for more real-life strength tests.
