tokyobike tokyobike is a small, independent bicycle company founded in 2002 in the quiet Tokyo suburb of Yanaka.

The name was derived from the design of the bikes. In the same way the mountain bike was designed for the mountains so tokyobike was designed for Tokyo. Based on the concept of ‘Tokyo Slow’ the bikes are designed to be light to ride with an emphasis on comfort over speed. The bike is simply a way to enjoy your city, as much about the journey as the destination.

City Cycling is about discovery and this month we took a ‘slow’ ride down to the Photographers gallery The Photographers' Gallery for a look at their current exhibition Japanese Women Photographers, From 1950s to Now.

You don’t need to go far for a weekend escape. We loaded up the new tokyobike Porter (e cargo bike) with some of our new Montbell camping gear and headed for the Lea Valley and a night under the stars.

Once at the campsite and set up for the night, we reached for the cool box full with cold beer - the reward for our efforts. The Montbell tarp kept the sun at bay and the Alpine cooker was tasked with cooking perfect rice.

A quick reset with just three ingredients: good fun, good gear and teamwork.

05 | VARIABLE CARRIER

A versatile 2-way carrier.

Simply flip the carrier upside down when mounting to create a flat platform. The spacious base also makes it easy to load larger items and secure them with straps or bungee cords.

04 | INDEPENDENT STEERING

A stable ride, even with heavy loads.

Our independent steering system keeps the carrier steady when you turn the handlebars. That means better balance, easier handling, and a more stable bike when stopping - helping reduce the risk of tipping over.

03 | LOW CARRIER

Designed low for greater stability.

The low-positioned carrier provides a stable ride, makes it easier to load and unload cargo or children, and offers space for taller items without compromising balance.

NIGO: From Japan with love

We cycled over from East London on a sun-soaked afternoon, taking the scenic route past some of London’s most iconic landmarks - it’s fun being a tourist in your own city sometimes.

Thanks to the Design Museum for the invite and to everyone who came along for the ride.

The exhibition continues until October 2026. Read more via link in bio
