The part of injury rehab that no one warns you about and the mental strain it can take

Flare ups during the recovery process are fairly common especially in connective tissue injuries such as tendons / ligaments and cartilage repair

For the tissue to repair and be able to function normally again, you have to slowly load it for it to rebuild.

Don’t load it enough - the tissues won’t repair properly as they need enough stimulus for collagen synthesis to occur and lay down new fibres, as well as getting the blood flow into the area to bring these collagen building blocks

Loading it too quickly - flare up and possible reinjury if you are not careful

Finding the balance can be frustrating as sometimes you don’t know if you did too much until 24-48 hours later (when the inflammation peaks)

A lot of the time it feels like an educated guessing game and everyone has a different tolerance

Flare ups are part of the process, but that doesn’t stop it feeling scary when it happens and you can feel like you have gone back to square one

It’s especially hard as an elite athlete to feel like this as you have a higher expectation of what is normal and you tend to have more body awareness than the average person.
So when so even when something feels slightly off alarm bells start ringing mentally and physically. You start to hyper fixate on any small sensation in your body.

And with that then blame yourself for doing something wrong, even if you were following the rehab protocol to the letter.

Its can be hard physically but even more mentally

But generally the flare ups tend to pass within 3-5 days as the level of inflammation drops back down

You haven’t lost the progress you made before, you just put the breaks on whilst the inflammation settles back down again

The most important part is not to panic as this can increase the time it takes for the flare up to calm down

Keeping positive is hard but it’s important

If you ever feel like you are screaming into a void because of circumstances mostly out of your control.. know you are not alone

This last year has been a lot and I know I’ve still got a long way to go, but I’m grateful for the support I have around me

Asking for help can be hard, but allowing yourself time to grieve and get over what was lost can be harder, especially if the road feels never ending

The further I get through the process the better I feel, but at the same time I feel further and further away from where I want to be

Maybe that’s who I am supposed to be now and maybe it’s for the better, but I honestly couldn’t tell you because although part of me feels back to normal.. the other part feels very lost

I hope it will improve over time. As it did back when I hurt my adductor… but this time feels different, both good and not so good, and it’s really hard to stay positive sometimes. I think I’m partially numb to it now because this is not my first injury

So when people ask how I am the usual answers come out… I’m fine, Yh it’s ok etc etc, because it’s honestly a lot to lay on someone when it’s just a passing comment in conversation

But I’m lucky to have such amazing support around me, because without them I would be in a much worse situation ❤️

So for anyone that is in a similar situation, lean on your support network they can really change the game

A scary one to post as I haven’t really been able to put the words together in the past

But I feel people need to know that some elite sport systems aren’t designed for everyone

Some people work really well on them and others find it hard to perform

It’s not that they can’t handle pressure.. but the level of pressure they put on themselves + the system can push it over the edge

Finding a system that works for you is key

And that is what makes a successful athlete

Forever grateful to British Weight Lifting for giving me opportunities that only some could dream of.. just wish I could have let my brain enjoy them for what they are… opportunities and experiences

Not do or die moments

❤️ work with your brain not against it
