2nd XI Result vs Kings Langley - 22nd May 2021
Northampton Exiles 2nd XI - 143/10 from 43 Overs
Kings Langley 2nd XI - 56/10 from 31.3 Overs
Given that the first two league games had been lost to the typically English May weather, there was a buzz of excitement in the air on the morning of Northampton Exiles 2s visit to Kings Langley. Mark Chakravarti was up early with his weathervane, rain gauge and barometer making forecasts for the day. Unfortunately for him, the Kings Langley groundsman had different intel and the game was on.
The wicket was a little damp and with the potential for showers later in the day, the toss would be crucial. Kings Langley electing to field on winning which was a surprise to no one.
Kasim Shamim was happy to roll back the years and fill the vacant opening spot, joining Mark to take on the new ball and the likely tough conditions. They got off to a fast start, notching up 26 in 5 overs, only for Mark to be dismissed lbw much to his disappointment. I’ll let you guess whether his chagrin was down to his lack of foot movement or what he felt was a harsh decision.
Dilpesh Nathulal fell for a duck in the next over and Exiles were on a precarious 27 for 2. Exiles Captain, Rohan Patel out to the crease, soaking up the round of applause from the fielding side for his joyously coloured cap. Unfortunately, his batting was nowhere near as entertaining and he proceeded to play and miss, hit every fielder and mostly struggle to get the ball off the square. At the other end Kasim was able to generate a little more fluidity but the combination of overcast conditions, wet pitch and a boundary on one side that you would consider calling an Uber to get to, meant every single run was hard-earned.
The partnership was broken 13 shy of a hundred, when Kasim mistimed one and was caught, for a priceless 44. Rohan fell soon after for 38, the highlight of his innings being a four to the longest boundary on the ground. With the final 7 wickets posting just 29 runs, Exiles were a little nervous that their 143 was maybe a little short of a par score.
The last few overs of the Exiles innings were greeted with a rain shower, which continued through tea but stopped just in time for the Kings Langley innings to begin without delay.
Manish Shantilal and Hubert James were visibly licking their lips at the prospect of bowling with the new ball in the favourable conditions. And they did not disappoint. In his first over, Hubert bowled a delightful delivery that moved away just enough to take the edge of J Forster’s bat; Rohan gratefully collecting the simple take. At the other end, Manish’s prodigious swing at a teasing pace was too much for A Colquhoun to resist, getting a healthy edge to Abdul Arif, well positioned at third slip. Abdul did well to palm it up into the air and comfortably took it at the second attempt.
Manish bowled out his allocation, taking 2 more wickets, including the dangerous looking left-handed Kings Langley Captain, lbw with a perfectly shaped in-swinger. Hubert was given a rest after a shorter 5 over spell but there was to be no respite as Abdul replaced him and found his rhythm early. S Naeem had hung around a bit longer than many of his teammates and Exiles were glad to see the back of him when he didn’t get to the pitch of a stock away-swinger from Abdul and spooned it up to Mehul Shah at backward point. The sixth wicket partnership proved to be a little stubborn, putting on 25, but was broken when Abdul was able to elicit a caught and bowled chance from the young J Kilt.
Dhruvil Mohan, took a couple of overs to find his length, but when he did, he proved a difficult prospect, moving the ball back in to the right handers with his left arm over medium pacers. The last 4 wickets fell quickly, Dhruvil taking 3 and Marcus Ghamari, who covered a lot of ground in the field, taking 1.
It was a good win for Exiles, given the lost toss, but no doubt the challenges will get tougher as the season progresses.
