The Breathing Mechanism and Core Control
An online workshop with Cara Reeser and Jeremy Laverdure
(3 hours a day over 3 days)
Friday 15th - Sunday 17th May 2026
3pm to 6pm daily (UK time) (Total of 9 hours) via Zoom and open to all Pilates teachers 💫
A recording of all three sessions will be made available for 30 days to those who book, whether you are able to attend each session or not.
One current model of the body’s “core” includes the abdominal and low back muscles, the thoracic diaphragm, and the pelvic floor. Because these muscles are also intimately involved in breathing, breath
control and core control are inseparable. Understanding the implications of this model makes it easier to correctly and safely coach both Pilates exercises and functional movement.
In this Movement Science Made Simple course, we examine:
● How the abdominals, diaphragm, and pelvic floor work together as part of the breathing
mechanism, and as movers and stabilisers of the lumbar spine and pelvis.
● The physiology of breathing, emphasising the interplay between voluntary and involuntary
regulation.
● The role of intra-abdominal pressure in low back stability, and the necessity of both abdominal
“hollowing” and abdominal “bracing” movement strategies.
● Supportive and stabilising functions of the pelvic floor, including its role in intra-pelvic stability.
Beginning with breathing exercises from Pilates, yoga, and physical therapy, we will build a strong
foundation for our own movement. As the relationship between breath control and core control
becomes clear, course participants will learn how breathing strategies can facilitate or undermine
movement strategies.

Class Descriptions 😊
Mat Pilates - You will develop your Pilates technique and skills by means of a safe, balanced, effective, total body workout – with particular focus on your core. All Levels.
Reformer Pilates - These classes offer you the chance to achieve an intensive workout which is as much about correct technique as strength and stamina. You will work with different levels of resistance on The Reformer. You should be at least Beginner/Intermediate Matwork level to join Reformer classes.
Tower Class - Body Control Pilates is one of the few studios to offer group classes on the Tower. The Tower is a versatile piece of equipment added to The Reformer, which uses spring resistance to both challenge and support. The spring resistance will promote strength, stamina and balance to enhance your technique and build strong, fluid movements. To join the class you need to be at an Intermediate level in Matwork and have Reformer experience.
Student Classes This class is only open to students on the Body Control Matwork Teacher Training or Bridging courses. We will focus solely on the exercises that you have learnt in your Matwork training.
These classes offer an excellent environment in which to develop your technique and advance your understanding. You can be in any stage of your training to join these classes.
All classes take place at The Body Control Pilates Centre in Bloomsbury (near Covent Garden)

Our new 5 week block of Live- Stream Pilates classes starts from Monday 23rd February until Friday 27th March 2026.
All classes are taught by our London Centre tutors and teachers and are live via Zoom.
You are booking into the same class for 5 weeks.
Booking is currently for the block only until 25th February when you can then book one-off classes!

You must already hold a Pilates matwork qualification to join our equipment courses, which build in a modular way and recognise that some teachers may not plan to teach across the full range of equipment.
It is therefore totally up to you whether you choose to stop at the Reformer in terms of your qualification, or whether you want to work through to the other studio equipment.
If you trained in matwork with us – or joined our Matwork Bridging Course – you may want to eventually work towards your Comprehensive Studio or Master Studio qualifications 💫
