Embarassing story. I once forgot my own name.
I’m not even kidding!
It was the early 90s at an audition for Crazy for You in the West End. They called my name three times. I nearly missed my spot.
My mate shouted across the room and said, “Hey Scottish! (one of my many nicknames over the years), I said, “What!? Oh, wait a minute, that’s me!”
The whole room laughed.
I’d changed my name a few months before. But that wasn’t really the problem.
The problem was I wasn’t there. Not fully. My focus was scattered, my mind was somewhere else entirely and I completely missed it! That happened a lot.
I actually ended up getting that gig.
A year later I created Monkhouses Memory Masters, went out to 8 million on the Beeb. Teaching people how to improve their memory (ah, the irony!)
The last 30 years I’ve spent “a lot” of time understanding why we get into unfocused states and how to turn them on. There’s actually a story that happened 5 years later that was way worse (I’ll save it for later).
The upshot, here’s what I’ve found: most people think memory is about information. Facts. Names. Numbers.
It’s not.
It’s really about focus, how you’re primed (by the way so is productivity, so is your ability to manage emotion). Your ability to take control of where your attention goes.
That’s what puts you fully in the room. Fully in the conversation. Fully in your own life.
And when you learn to do that?
You don’t just remember more. You show up differently.

There’s a chasm between learning and doing, it goes like this…
- Unknowns: stuff that is genuinely new to you
- Recognition: this is a danger zone, you think you know this stuff but you couldn’t explain it to someone (lot’s of people are here with AI right now)
🌄 The Chasm Starts HERE…
- Knowing: you know this stuff and can explain it
- Doing: Putting what you know and what you are learning into practice
Real learning MUST go through all 4 stages, there is no shortcut.
Right now is an interesting time as AI is disrupting the workplace.
For most...
- you must adapt
- you must engaging in learning
- or you get left behind.
I was in Product Management for 10 years.
In that domain, if you are not incorporating AI in how you operate, you’re in trouble.
If you’re a Founder and not at the forefront of AI, again, you’re in trouble.
You’ve probably seen the same in your own domain.
It’s not enough to just “Use what you know” (although, yeh that’s a great start and most people don’t). The solution to that by the way is habit and behaviour design (not motivation).
Now is the time to grow.
The real challenge?
Most people don’t have a system to cut through the noise (and there’s a lot of it) and learn rapidly.
The first step? Recognise what stage you’re at and actively figure out how you get over the chasm.
What’s your take?

AI can give you the answer in seconds.
But can you still remember it tomorrow? 🧠⚡️
I ran thousands of memory sessions over the last 30 years and it doesn’t matter the mix of people, mature students, professionals, actors, creatives or founders.
The goals are all different:
- Deal with information overload
- Pass a professional exam
- Skill up in a new domain (AI being a hot topic)
- Memorise key info and data for work
- Improve remembering on the fly; names, conversations etc
But the one thing that remains consistent is, there’s a real pressure to keep up.
I ask one simple question:
“How do you currently remember what you learn?”
I see the usual suspects:
- Notes
- Highlights
- Re-reading
- More notes
- Notes you never look at again
A lot of effort. A lot of time. Very little retention.
AI is emphasising the problem. It gives you the answers but retention is low.
But strategies that are proven to work?
- memory techniques.
- learning systems.
- emotional management
Rarely used.
But I share one technique and in 10 minutes, 20 strategies I’m covering in the session are memorised.
Not just for 5 minutes, but days, weeks (sometimes months) just by doing it this one time. For most a few retrieval sessions lock it in
The tools exist.
The science is clear.
The pain point (information overload) has never been higher.
Yet most people still choose the old way.
Why?
❌ Fear of doing it wrong
❌ Belief that memory can’t be trained
❌ Or habit, dressed up as “this is how I’ve always learned, my brain doesn’t work this way”.
AI isn’t the problem.
Forgetting is.
And that’s exactly why Memory School exists.

LOCI just made memorising books 10x faster.
Just tested it with James Clear Atomic Habits
This goes way beyond book summary apps.
Here’s how it works...
Step 1
Choose LOCI’s book agent (you can also do youtube videos, articles etc.)
LOCI will search the internet and find the top reviews and resources for any book and extract all the key ideas into a memorable format
Step 2
LOCI creates a set of flash cards with imagery that’s hard to forget. The images act as a human “Prompt” that reminds you of a core idea (you can change, update or add to these)
Step 3
The Secret Sauce: This is the ‘wow!’ moment. LOCI generates a Memory Palace (think sherlock holmes) tapping into our spatial and visual memory (this makes the key ideas stick rapidly). What you experience here may feel like magic the first time you do it.
Memory Palaces are very misunderstood, most people (even experts) see them as memory tools but they are way more than this, used correctly they allow you to deepen your ‘thinking’ and ‘understanding’ on any topic.
Step 4
Retrieval: LOCI reminds you at the right time to review the information, transferring it into long-term memory.
When you start you will memorise a the key ideas in most books in about 10-15 minutes. As you become practiced it can be as quick as 2-3 minutes.
Step 5
The outcome:
- You’re more motivated to go read the book
- Since you have a map in your mind before reading, you’re brain is primed, meaning not only will you naturally read faster, more information will stick
- After reading you can add to more ideas and personal insights to your memory palace
LOCI will be launching soon with it’s early access audience.
If you want on the list just drop a like and a comment letting me know what book you would want to memorise first?

You’re ability to learn fast and skill up in the age of AI is an unfair advantage.
The challenge I’ve seen most with courses, books, apps and training is people:
- struggling to get started
- losing momentum and don’t finish
- never put what they learn into practice
So for the last few months, I’ve been quietly building something I’ve wanted to create for a long time.
Today, I’m launching it.
The Memory Master Programme.
Really this has been 30 years in the making, going back to my gameshow that went out to 8 million on the BBC back in ‘95, Monkhouses Memory Masters, so it’s a nod to where I started.
This is a 3-month, 1-to-1 brain system.
This isn’t about collecting techniques.
It’s about leaving with the confidence that you can learn anything.
Maybe you’re skilling up in:
- AI for your business
- a new marketing or sales system
- a new product domain
- a professional exam
- or a passion like music, yoga, pilates, tap dancing!
The point isn’t what you learn.
The point is that by the end, you know you can learn anything.
And we’ll tackle the underlying blockers to brain performance:
- Fear
- Anxiety
- Comparison
- Overthinking
- Imposter syndrome
Here’s the promise. By the end of 3 months, you will:
- Focus and learn 3x to 10x more effectively
- Build habits that keep you mentally sharp
- Make real progress in one domain that actually matters to you
- Walk away with a learning system you can reuse for life
Just give me a shout if you want to learn more (drop me a DM).

For 30 years I’ve been showing people how to achieve a Superhuman Memory. This week I gave a Sunday Times reporter a crash course.
Do this for yourself and you’ll 10X your ability to learn anything smarter and faster.
- Prime: set your brain up to pay attention to what really matters and cut out the noise
- Flow: being able to create this state at will increases memory, productivity and results
- Connect: be the detective, don’t “start” by trying to remember, get curious and make connections
- Superhuman: learn how to take 2000 year old memory strategies and use them in the real world for personal or business growth
- Retrieve: want something to stick don’t repeat it practice retrieving it
- Act: knowledge without use creates little value, actively “put into practice” what you learn
- Habits: make everything above a habit, have it show up in your life, this is where real results live
PS. I’ll be diving deep on these strategies in my upcoming Memory Bootcamp for the Standard Masterclasses! 5th Feb.
