When we spend too long in fight-or-flight, something shifts. We stop showing up fully. We go through the motions. We become spectators of our own lives, present in body, but somewhere else entirely.

I’d spent so long in an elevated state, my breathing had become extremely shallow, without me even realising.
It’s one of the most common, and most overlooked, effects of chronic stress. And it creates a loop: shallow breath signals danger to the body, which keeps cortisol elevated, which keeps the breath shallow.
Learning to breathe from my diaphragm taught my body to feel safer and calmer. 🤍
