Behind the score | Six Lethargies

For composer Keaton Henson, Six Lethargies began as a deeply personal project, exploring the complexities of his emotion through an orchestral score that gave expression to his own experiences.

Without formal training in musical notation, Keaton developed an unconventional approach to composition, beginning with drawings, shapes and patterns that represented different emotional states.

Over three years, more than 100 musical ideas were developed, eventually becoming six movements for string orchestra.

This November, BalletBoyz reimagines Keaton’s score through movement in one of the company’s most ambitious productions to date, bringing together 44 dancers and 36 musicians on the Sadler’s Wells stage for a performance of extraordinary scale.

Not everything we carry can be seen, but it can always be felt.

44 dancers, 37 musicians… A monumental exploration of the emotions we contend with and the stories our bodies tell.

Eight years ago, Keaton Henson stepped away from music, returning with Six Lethargies, a monumental orchestral work exploring emotion and mental health.

Premiering at London’s Barbican in 2019, audience members were connected to monitors measuring their anxiety, which influenced the lighting around them.

For one night, strangers experienced something deeply personal, together.

This November, Six Lethargies returns on an even grander scale at Sadler’s Wells as a production of epic proportions, exploring the connection between mental health and the human body through music and movement, and asserting the value of art and creative expression as a tool for finding resolution.

Bringing together 44 dancers and a live 37-piece string orchestra, Six Lethargies explores anxiety, trauma and memory through the power of dance and music.
