In mid-June, several of our Queensland, New South Wales and Victorian senior group volunteered to complete a Homes set-up with our charity partner, RizeUp Australia.

RizeUp provides all the practical items needed for victim-survivors of family and domestic violence to make a fresh start, including furniture and other household items that help transform empty houses into homes.

When each of our GKR teams arrived at their location, they were greeted by a RizeUp driver, an empty house and a truck filled with flatpacks and homewares. The teams set about unloading the truck, assembling the flatpacks, making beds, filling pantries and carefully decorating the space. This included fitting out children’s bedrooms and providing them with the materials needed to start at a new school.

After 4+ hours of work at each location, the transformation from house to home left a lasting memory for all involved. With the knowledge that a family would be entering their newly furnished home in the coming days, each team member took comfort in knowing that they had helped create a new beginning for someone in need.

We are incredibly grateful to RizeUp for the work they do and for the opportunity to be involved in their Homes program. We also appreciate the amazing support shown by all of our students and instructors who participate in the Stop Domestic & Family Violence Purple Belt Campaign. Your involvement means a lot, not only to RizeUp and the families they help, but also to GKR Karate as a whole.

If you would like to volunteer with RizeUp to help setting up Homes, information can be found here https://www.rizeup.com.au/volunteer

“ I DON’T PAY FOR KARATE “

From a karate parent.......

One of my friends asked "Why do you pay so much money and spend so much time running around for your child to do karate ?" Well I have a confession to make: I don't pay for Karate! I don’t pay for my childs karate lessons. I don't pay for their mitts..... or suits or their competitions.

So, if I am not paying for karate, what am I paying for?

- I pay for those moments when my childs becomes so tired they feels like quitting but doesn't.
- I pay for the opportunity that my child can have and will have to make life-long friendships.
- I pay for the chance that they may have amazing instructors that will teach them that karate is not just about movement but about life.
- I pay for my child to learn to be disciplined.
- I pay for my child to learn to take care of herself.
- I pay for my child to learn to work with others and to be a proud, supportive, kind and respectful dojo member.
- I pay for my child to learn to deal with disappointment, when they don't get that score they hoped for, or fell during a move they have practiced a thousand times, but they still get up and is determined to do their BEST next time...
- I pay for my child to learn to make and accomplish goals.
- I pay for my child to learn that it takes hours and hours and hours and hours of hard work and practice to create a champion, and that success does not happen overnight.
- I pay so that my child can be in the dojo instead of in front of a screen...

I could go on but, to be short, I don't pay for karate; I pay for the opportunities that karate provides my child to develop attributes that will serve them well throughout their life and give them the opportunity to bless the lives of others. From what I have seen for many, many years, I think it is a great investment!
