PANDAS is a condition in which a child experiences a sudden, dramatic onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) or tics following a strep infection, like strep throat or scarlet fever.What Happens in the Body?Autoimmune Response: The body's immune system, while trying to fight off the streptococcal bacteria, mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in a specific part of the brain.Brain Inflammation: This misdirected attack leads to inflammation, causing acute neuropsychiatric and behavioral symptoms.Key SymptomsThe onset of PANDAS is notoriously sudden, often appearing "overnight" or escalating rapidly over 24 to 48 hours.Primary Symptoms: Sudden onset or severe worsening of OCD, and/or the sudden development of new motor or vocal tics.Comorbid Symptoms: Extreme mood swings, severe anxiety (especially separation anxiety), developmental regression, sleep disturbances, hyperactivity, and joint pain.Physical Signs: Motoric hyperactivity and abnormal, jerky, or "choreiform" movements.DiagnosisThere is no single blood test or brain scan to confirm PANDAS.
