“I Won’t Be a Modern-Day Pharisee”Why I Refuse to Preach a Gospel That Oppresses
There’s a kind of Christianity that Jesus never preached. The kind that beats people with the Bible instead of binding up their wounds. The kind that calls itself holy, but keeps the broken at arm’s length. The kind that looks more like the Pharisees than the Christ who came to set the captives free.
As a Black woman, a student of theology, and a follower of Jesus, I’ve seen how religion can be used as both weapon and refuge. I’ve read how my ancestors were told to obey their “masters” while being brutalised whip in one hand, Bible in the other. That is not the gospel of Jesus Christ.
And yet, that same spirit of oppression shows up in subtler ways today.
I watch people say they love God but then gossip, slander, and tear down His people behind closed doors. I see Christian cliques acting elite, like they’re heaven’s gatekeepers, deciding who’s “anointed enough” to sit at the table. There’s this unspoken “you can’t sit with us” attitude that creeps through our churches, conferences, and ministries.
But as I near the end of my second year of theological study, I feel the Holy Spirit stirring in me with a holy challenge.
God is calling me to speak up, to preach His truth but not with pride, not with superiority, not with cold doctrine. He’s calling me to speak with love, truth, and kindness.
The Word says, “Study to show yourself approved.” And while that has its academic implications, I believe the deeper call is this:Know Him. Not just the rules. Not just the rituals. But really know Him, so we can accurately reflect Him to a world that’s dying for authenticity.
I won’t be the one preaching freedom while living bound by legalism.
I won’t be a modern-day Pharisee. And I certainly won’t carry the whip of shame in one hand and the Bible in the other. I choose to follow Jesus the Jesus who sat with sinners, wept with the broken, and loved people back to life.
Because the gospel is not about domination. It’s about deliverance.
And if we miss that, we’ve missed Him.

Today is not a myth. Not an old folks’ tale.
You may not be a Christian.
You may not believe the Bible.
But today is a historical day.
Roughly 2,000 years ago, under the authority of Pontius Pilate, a man named Jesus of Nazareth was brutally crucified.
His life disrupted history.
His death disturbed the status quo.
And whether you believe He rose or not
He lived. He died. He split time in two.
History still bears His name.
Calendars still count from His birth.
And billions still call Him Lord.
So before you scroll past, ask yourself:
What if it’s true?
What if He really did rise?
What if today… was the day everything changed?
I’ve been reading Nancy Pearcey, and she makes a powerful point—every culture operates on an underlying worldview, shaping how we think, live, and engage with the world. But here’s what’s been weighing on my heart: Are we shaping culture, or is culture shaping us?
It’s one thing to talk about how secular ideologies postmodernism, scientism, moral relativism—are creeping into the church. But what about the way we treat each other? I look around and see Christians forming cliques, keeping others out, and failing to support one another. And it breaks my heart. The world unites to push its agenda, yet we, who carry the truth of the gospel, divide ourselves over status, platforms, and personal preferences.
Christianity isn’t just another belief system—it’s reality. It should shape how we love, how we support, how we build each other up. But instead, I see competition where there should be collaboration, silence where there should be encouragement, exclusion where there should be embrace. If we don’t intentionally align our hearts and minds with a biblical worldview, the world will teach us its ways—and it already has.
So I have to ask: How do we truly live out the gospel, not just in what we believe, but in how we treat one another? How do we become the kind of people who impact culture rather than mirror it? Because right now, my heart weeps for us as a people.
Let’s talk.

One thing about me I am far from perfect. In fact, I am flawed in more ways than I can count. Yet, for reasons I still can't fully understand, God chooses to use me. I often ask, *Why me, Lord?* But I've come to realise it's not about my perfection — it's about His grace.
As I've grown closer to God, my discernment has sharpened. It's a gift, but one that often comes with discomfort. At this stage in my life, I refuse to allow distraction to parade as friendship. I won't entertain monitoring spirits disguised as support or keep court with those who offer backhanded compliments but gossip about me in the next breath. This season requires clarity, and I will no longer apologise for protecting my peace.
I truly believe in the hope that is found in Jesus Christ not just for today, but for the eschatological hope of eternity. I'm not looking for clout or applause; I'm working out my salvation with fear and trembling . The truth is, this faith walk can be lonely at times, but I'd rather walk alone with God than be surrounded by many without Him.
We're in a time where too many desire to be more famous than Jesus but I refuse to lose my soul chasing validation. As we navigate 2025, I encourage you to take inventory of your spiritual life and the company you keep. Not everyone around you is assigned to your destiny. Some connections are seasonal, and others are sent to derail you.
If God is calling you to stand apart, don't be afraid to embrace the isolation it's in the secret place that He reveals His greatest plans.
