UK practice on winning team for Budapest railway yard regeneration A team featuring London-based Marko&Placemakers has won an international competition to remasterplan Budapest’s Rákosrendező brownfield area

We’re excited to reveal more about our FIRST PRIZE–winning proposal in the international masterplanning competition for Rákosrendező Projekt in Budapest. A 244ha former railway yard is reimagined as a liveable, green, and inclusive district with ~10,000 homes and a strong network of public spaces.

Our approach is landscape-led:
– restoring the Rákos Stream as a central ecological corridor
– transforming wild, post-industrial nature into parks and habitats
– reusing railway heritage to shape a new identity

A continuous green framework connects neighbourhoods, while a cultural axis brings new life to existing structures. The result is a people-first district designed for walking, cycling, and everyday urban life. New Rákosrendező becomes a shared habitat—where nature, infrastructure, and community come together.

Commissioned by the Budapest Capital Asset Management Centre on behalf of the Municipality of Budapest.

The first phase of Vydrica is here – and it’s a joy to see this long-forgotten part of Bratislava come back to life. Our approach to the public spaces aimed to create a human-scale car free neighbourhood with new plazas, landscaping and carefully integrated historic features. Vydrica is located beneath the Castle Hill, an area which has been destroyed in 1970s. The long awaited new development is restoring continuity to the city in this sensitive setting, removing barriers and reconnecting the historic centre with the Danube. The next phase of Vydrica will bring more homes, workplaces and cultural spaces – but already, you can feel the new spirit of the place.
