🥋 Black Belt Success! 🥋
What an incredible weekend at our Black Belt grading in Skibbereen!
After 6 gruelling hours of testing, we're delighted to say that everyone passed! This is the result of years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Each of these students has trained with our club for a minimum of 9 years, and they truly earned this achievement.
A huge congratulations to our newest Black Belts:
🥋 Ava Scarlett
🥋 Mia Scarlett
🥋 Jimmy Thompson
🥋 Jagoda Maciejeska
🥋 Karol McCarthy
You should all be immensely proud of what you've accomplished.
A big congratulations also to all of our students who successfully passed their Brown Belt grading. The standard was outstanding, and the effort, determination, and spirit shown by everyone was fantastic.
A memorable day for the club. Well done, everyone! 👏💪

An amazing night had by all at The Pike Bar in Lisavard, Clonakilty last night in aid of our 8 athletes representing Ireland at the World Kickboxing Competition in Italy in September 🥳🥳🥳

We had a fantastic night at the Music Bingo 🎶 💃🕺 Dancing, games and craic a plenty throughout the night.Brilliant prizes throughout and a raffle at the end.

We raised just over €1,000 to support these fantastic athletes on their journey! 🥳🩷💙

A huge Thank You to Jamie at The Pike Bar for letting us host there and to the Amazing Duo Nicola & William for hosting Music Bingo which was just the best night ever! 🥰🥰

A massive thanks to Belinda, Fiona and Lorraine for organising the whole event, lots of work went into a great night 😍

Of course no funds would have accumulated were it not for all of you who dug deep into your pockets to support our athletes, of whom are so fortunate be part of this amazing club .

Watch this space more events to come over the summer 👀👀 whilst our athletes train daily in prep for The Kickboxing World Competition 🥊💪🥊💪

A story about the Side Kick ⤵️

The side kick has roots in several martial arts traditions across Asia. You see early forms in Chinese martial systems, where fighters used linear kicks to create distance and control space. These kicks relied on structure and balance, not speed alone.

In Okinawa and later in Japanese karate, the technique became more defined. Styles such as Shotokan formalized the side kick, known as yoko geri. Practitioners trained it with strict mechanics. The knee lifts first. The body turns sideways. The heel drives straight into the target. This method increases power and reduces risk of injury.

Korean martial arts refined the side kick further. In Taekwondo, the technique became a core weapon. Fighters emphasized speed, reach, and precision. They used it in sparring to stop forward movement and score points. Competitive rules pushed athletes to deliver fast, clean strikes, which shaped how the kick evolved.

Bruce Lee played a key role in modern awareness of the side kick. He used it as a primary tool in Jeet Kune Do. He focused on efficiency. His version relied on minimal movement and direct impact. He often targeted the knee, midsection, or hip to disrupt an opponent quickly.

Today, the side kick appears in many combat sports and self defense systems. You see it in MMA, kickboxing, and traditional martial arts. Its purpose stays consistent. It creates distance. It stops attacks. It delivers strong force through the heel.

The technique endures because it works. It combines reach, power, and control in one movement.
