Your First Dance Class: Here's What to Expect

Not sure what to wear, bring, or do when you walk through the door for your very first dance class? You're not alone. That mix of excitement and "what have I got myself into?" is something almost every new dancer feels, and the good news is it's much simpler than you might think. Comfortable, well-fitting clothing that lets you move freely is your best starting point — think smart-casual rather than anything too restrictive. For footwear, a pair of clean, smooth-soled shoes (not chunky trainers) will help you glide through those first Waltz and Cha Cha Cha steps without gripping the floor. As for what to bring? Just yourself, a little patience, and the willingness to have fun. No prior experience needed whatsoever. 🕺

At Kelly's Dance Studio, absolute beginners are welcomed onto our popular 10-12 week Ballroom and Latin Courses, where you'll get to grips with dances like the Waltz, Jive, Rumba, and more, all in a relaxed and friendly environment. There are even medals to work towards as your confidence grows! We also have Saturday classes for children, plus private lessons if you'd prefer a more personal approach. Whether you're signing up solo, as a couple, or enrolling your little one, the first class is really just about enjoying yourself. What's the one thing that's been holding you back from trying dance? Ballroom vs Latin American Dance: What's the Difference?

If you've ever wondered whether you want to learn Waltz or Cha Cha Cha but aren't quite sure what sets them apart, you're not alone. Ballroom and Latin American dance are two distinct styles, each with its own character, music, and feel. Ballroom dances like the Waltz and Quickstep are elegant and flowing, with partners moving in a classic hold across the floor. The Waltz, for example, originally an 18th century Austrian folk dance, captures romance through sweeping, graceful movement. Latin American styles are a completely different energy. The Rumba (often called the "Queen" of Latin dances) is slow, sensual, and deeply expressive, while the Cha Cha Cha is upbeat and playful, its very name coming from the rhythm your feet make on the floor. The Jive, born in 1940s America, brings lively kicks and energy that's hard not to smile through. 🕺

At Kelly's Dance Studio in Hampton, classes cover both styles from the ground up, whether you're an absolute beginner or working towards Gold medal level. Which style sounds more like you? Are you drawn to the elegance of Ballroom, or does the energy of Latin American appeal more? Drop your answer in the comments! If you'd like to give it a go, new courses start regularly throughout the year and are open to all ages and abilities. 💃

They Signed Up "Just for a School Ball." Now They Can't Stop Dancing 💃

Laurie and Liz had never done formal dancing in their lives. No lessons, no fancy footwork, just a bit of bopping at parties. Then their kids' school ball came along, and suddenly Liz needed to waltz with her son on the night. So Laurie tagged along to Saturday sessions at Kelly's Dance Studio to be her practice partner. Neither of them expected much.

What happened next? They fell completely in love with it. Waltz, foxtrot, cha-cha-cha, the lot. Laurie (who was "particularly not keen") described Keith as "a born teacher" — patient, funny, and brilliant at helping couples get it right, even on the days he had 21 pairs to guide at once. The school ball went beautifully, the kids were brilliant, and Laurie and Liz are now signed up for more classes. That's the Kelly's effect. Whether you're an absolute beginner, a parent dancing alongside your child, or simply curious whether dance might be your thing, Keith and Kornelia meet you exactly where you are at their Hampton studio, serving families across Feltham, Twickenham, Sunbury, Staines, Kingston and beyond. Have you ever surprised yourself by loving something you were sure wasn't for you? Or are you quietly wondering if dance classes could be your next great hobby? 👇 Drop a comment below.

Two Left Feet? That's the Best Reason to Start Dancing 💃

Thinking you're a hopeless dancer is actually the most common reason people walk through our doors at Kelly's Dance Studio — and it's exactly why you'll fit right in. Keith Kelly himself started dancing after struggling on the floor, and that founding story is baked into everything we do here. So if you've been putting off learning because you reckon you've got two left feet, we'd gently suggest that's not a reason to wait. It's a reason to start.

Our Absolute Beginners Ballroom and Latin Course is built for people who've never danced a step in their lives. You'll pick up Waltz, Cha Cha Cha, Jive, Rumba and more, in a friendly, no-pressure environment where you go at your own pace. Beyond the fun, ballroom dancing is a brilliant full-body workout that's low-impact and suits all ages, from kids building co-ordination in our Saturday children's classes, right through to adults looking for a social hobby that actually gets you off the sofa. Classes run throughout the year with new courses starting regularly, so there's never a wrong time to take that first step. Have you ever tried ballroom dancing before, or is this something you've always been curious about? Drop a comment below and let us know! 👇
