Chelsea and Alonso have no interest in keeping unhappy players, as reported. Enzo did not accept the provisional wage offers in recent months. A fee of £100m could be enough to do it, although Chelsea's current stance is £120m.

🚨Exclusive: Chelsea’s UEFA Squad Restriction Explained – And Why Missing Europe Is a Blessing in Disguise

Chelsea were hit with a major UEFA punishment last summer after breaching the Squad Cost Rule. As part of the €31m fine and settlement, the club agreed to strict limits on registering new players for European competitions in both 2025/26 and 2026/27. Any incoming signings could only be added to the UEFA List A squad if Chelsea generated a positive net transfer balance – basically, they had to sell or create enough cost savings first. Without that, new players risked being blocked from European matches entirely.

Had Chelsea finished in a European spot and qualified for the 2026/27 Europa League or Conference League, this restriction would have immediately kicked in again. They would have been forced to submit a full UEFA squad list in the summer window, meaning any big new signings would have been handcuffed by the net-spend rule. It would have created a serious headache for recruitment and squad planning just as the club tries to rebuild.

But because Chelsea ended up outside the European places (finishing around 10th in the Premier League), they have no UEFA competition to enter next season. That means no squad list to submit – and therefore this specific registration restriction simply does not apply for 2026/27. The club can now sign players freely for the domestic campaign without those extra UEFA handcuffs hanging over every deal.

Of course, the broader settlement with UEFA still looms. A suspended one-season European ban remains in place, and missing out on Champions League revenue actually increases the financial pressure. Still, for this summer at least, dodging the Europa League has given Chelsea unexpected breathing room on the transfer front. A rare silver lining from a disappointing season.
