A gentle reminder to actually check your kit…

I bought this AP Valve pocket reel used on eBay ages ago — back when I was taking my first wobbly steps in scuba diving.

In true beginner optimism, I simply trusted it was exactly what it claimed to be. I tested it once in a pool, decided that was perfectly adequate quality control, and then happily forgot about it.

Today I gave my reels and spools a proper once-over and double-checked the line lengths. This model should have 45 m (~147 ft) of line.

It had 20 m.

Twenty.

So not quite a 45 m reel. More of a “hope for the best” edition.

Yes, I probably should have checked it when I bought it. But on the bright side, at least I had the rare flash of competence not to take it on a dive before checking it 😅

Diving weekend ahead 🤿 For the next two days, I’ll be an assistant instructor at a twin-set course. Lesson prompts are ready, gear checked and set up, alarm set for 5 AM 🕔 🤙🏻

Learning a new skill—this math is way more interesting than planning consecutive dives at different sites with varying altitudes using dive tables 😆

Packing for a scuba holiday used to be simple. Now it looks like a small dive shop exploded in our living room 😅
