Every grassroots coach knows this feeling....

The quiet doubt when you’re trying to do right by every child but know you can’t please everyone.
The pressure of decisions that look simple from the touchline but feel heavy when kids’ confidence is involved.
The moments you replay in your head long after the session ends, wondering if you got it right. No one really talks about it — but it’s part of caring.
And that care is exactly what makes grassroots coaches so important.

Kids wanting to win isn’t the problem.

That’s natural.

The problem starts when adults make winning more important than:
• Effort
• Confidence
• Enjoyment
• Trying new things
• Loving the game

Too many children walk away from football because the pressure outweighs the fun.

Grassroots football should build players up — not make them afraid to make mistakes.

Long after the trophies are forgotten, children remember how the game made them feel.

The best coaches don’t just develop talent.
They develop standards.

How players react after mistakes.
How they treat teammates.
How they respond when challenged.

That’s what shapes teams long after results are forgotten.

Talent wins games.
Character sustains teams.

Most parents won’t remember the score.

They’ll remember how their child felt.

Did they feel included?
Encouraged?
Supported after mistakes?
Part of something?

That’s what stays with families long after the season ends.

Wins fade.
League tables change.
But confidence, belonging and enjoyment can shape a child for life.

Grassroots football has always been bigger than the result.

Not every child develops at the same speed.
Some shine early.
Some take longer.
Some suddenly click when nobody expects it.

That’s why comparison can be so damaging.

Development isn’t linear.
Confidence matters.
Enjoyment matters.
Support matters.

The goal should never be who’s best at 9, 11 or 13.

The goal is helping young players stay in love with the game long enough to reach their potential.

Football is a marathon, not a sprint.

One of the biggest myths in grassroots football 👇

That the “best” players at Under 7s are the ones who will still be leading the way years later.
They aren’t always.
Some early standouts rely on physical advantage.
Some late developers are quietly building balance, coordination and game understanding.
Fast forward a few seasons…
And the labels have flipped.
Development is not linear.
Progress is not equal.
And patience is one of the most important tools a coach can have.

Here’s to the coaches trying to keep the competitive kids buzzing… and the quiet kids smiling.

Here’s to the coaches dealing with tears in the car because a child was subbed so someone else could play.

Here’s to the coaches still blamed for a game they lost years ago because they chose fairness over winning.

Here’s to the coaches teaching advanced tactics to some, basic touches to others… and somehow making it all work.

Here’s to the coaches who can’t pick their own child for awards, hoping their kid has a moment of magic just to feel seen.

Here’s to the coaches who get judged, doubted, questioned, while giving everything for kids who’ll remember them forever.

Here’s to the coaches who stay respectful, stay patient, stay committed… even when it hurts.

Here’s to the coaches. The heartbeat of grassroots football. 💚

HE IS JUST A LITTLE BOY ⚽

He waits in position, heart pounding in his chest.
The ball is won, the pass comes, now it’s his test.
Mum and Dad can’t help him, he stands on his own,
One goal would win it, the team’s hopes rest on him alone.
He tries his best, but the ball slips from his grasp,
A groan from the sidelines, hands to heads in gasp.
“He should never have been picked!” shouts a thoughtless fan.
Tears well in his eyes, the fun suddenly gone.
Open your heart, give him a break.
It’s in moments like these that character takes shape.
Remember this lesson, please don’t forget:
He’s just a little boy, not a man, not yet.

Any positivity appreciated here, please 🙏

"I've just completed my first season as a coach of a U10's team but over the past few months, I've witnessed some things at my club that have really disappointed me and left me questioning whether I want me and my children to be involved in kids football.
I've witnessed teammates arguing and falling out on the pitch, parents engaging in full-blown rows with players (their own and others), abuse directed at coaches, myself and others, and private WhatsApp groups, the amount of backstabbing is on another level. Not only is this getting me down, but it's also affecting my wife. The final straw is my son being the target of some of the parents whilst my wife has to stand by and be expected to say nothing.
I'm just so disillusioned with it all, can someone please remind me why we do this and give me a lift with positive news/ messages etc.
Apologies for the negative post, but can someone please remind me why we give up our time for free to coach other people's kids?"

One of the hardest parts of coaching is accepting that criticism comes with the role.

You can give up your evenings.
Plan sessions properly.
Treat every child fairly.
Care deeply.

And still get questioned.

That doesn’t mean you’re failing.

Grassroots football needs more coaches who stay grounded, stay consistent, and keep the focus where it belongs — on the kids.

The best coaches aren’t the ones everyone agrees with.
They’re the ones who keep showing up with the right intentions.

Every grassroots coach has lived this conversation.

One message asking who’s unavailable…

15 replies confirming who CAN play 🤣
