Michael Carrick has a big decision to make over his team selection for Manchester United’s Carabao Cup third-round clash with Brighton at Old Trafford.

With some players having received fewer minutes than others across the opening five games, Carrick was asked whether the cup tie could provide an opportunity to rotate his squad.

But the United boss made one thing clear: winning remains the priority.

🔃 Speaking about the importance of trophies, Carrick said:

“Trophies are the beauty and the feeling of winning. It is what we’re in football for, what we’re in sport for. It’s certainly what I’m at this club for – to try to win.

“It’s not straightforward, and you decide you want to win and you go and win. Of course not. But it’s important. I think trophies and achieving things and giving supporters that feeling of emotion of that is important, definitely.”

🔃 On whether he has to carefully balance rotation with the need to win, Carrick added:

“Yeah, definitely. Obviously, they are the decisions that we have to make.

“It’s important for us to win football matches and it’s important that we manage the squad as well and get everyone up and keep everyone up to speed, keep everyone ready, keep everyone part of it.

“But certainly we’re going into Wednesday trying to win the game.”

So, changes could be coming… but the message is clear: United want to win the Carabao Cup. 🏆🔴

Michael Carrick has praised Marcus Rashford’s return to Manchester United, saying he is delighted with the forward’s performances and how quickly he has settled back in.

“Really pleased with Marcus, yeah. Really pleased with him in so many ways. I think it's pretty obvious with his performances. Again, he was a real threat again on Sunday, although, unfortunately, he didn't get a little bit more success, but he was a real threat again. We're just really pleased to have him. He's doing a lot of things really well and settled back in really quickly.”

Rashford was left out of the squad against Sabah as a precaution following the weekend, while Carrick also wanted to manage the workload across his attacking options.

“We've got good options, so we're trying to keep everyone fresh.”

Carrick confirmed that the decision also allowed Benjamin Šeško to get valuable minutes and build up his fitness.

Asked why the captain wasn’t taken off during United’s 4-0 win over Sabah, Michael Carrick explained that having only five substitutes meant difficult decisions had to be made.

“But of course, he's like anybody else. He has played an awful lot, but I think we're developing the group and the squad to be able to accommodate that in different ways.”

Bruno ultimately stayed on, but Carrick knows the workload will need to be managed as the season gets busier.

With the Champions League, Premier League and cup competitions all coming thick and fast, United will need to find ways to keep their captain fresh. 💪

Manuel Ugarte is continuing to work hard on his rehabilitation at Carrington following knee surgery this summer. 🇺🇾

The Uruguay international suffered a ligament injury in June while representing his country at the FIFA World Cup.

The operation was a success, but Ugarte faces a long road back to full fitness. He is currently working closely with Manchester United’s medical and performance staff as he continues his recovery.

The midfielder has now been pictured working in the gym at Carrington as he steps up his rehabilitation. 💪🔴

Michael Carrick has provided an update on his squad ahead of Sunday’s 199th Manchester derby at Old Trafford. 🏟️

Marcus Rashford was rested completely against Sabah after feeling some discomfort against Everton last weekend. Carrick confirmed the decision was partly precautionary and partly to manage the workload, with the forward being kept fresh for the derby.

Luke Shaw also missed the Champions League game after Carrick admitted he “wasn't quite ready for it, 100 per cent” and United chose not to risk him. His fitness will be assessed over the next couple of days.

Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu impressed at left-back against Sabah, earning the UEFA Player of the Match award — could he keep his place if Shaw isn't ready? 👀

Bruno Fernandes played the full 90 minutes despite appearing to pick up a knock during the game. Carrick did not indicate any major concern over the captain’s fitness, explaining that United had to make decisions around their five substitutions.

Matthijs de Ligt, Amad, Carlos Baleba and Manuel Ugarte remain unavailable due to injury.

Šeško, meanwhile, got valuable minutes against Sabah and scored his second goal in two appearances — giving Carrick another attacking option for the derby. 🔥

It’s fantastic that they’re all in good form and have started so well.”

It was also Martínez’s first-ever Champions League goal and his first career goal in European club competition.

Before tonight, Licha had scored three goals for Manchester United — against Arsenal, Liverpool and Fulham — but all three came away from home.
