Jersey Spotlight - Omar Pacha - Manchester Storm - 2016/2017

My first year with the Storm, my boyhood team who I’ve travelled Europe to watch. A Tweet to the then General Manager Neil Russell asking if they a strength programme in place, which they didn’t. After just one meeting with Neil & Pach, I came on board & had the best year of my Strength & Conditioning journey.

We clicked straight away. Their passion for the club & the community came through from the off. I was lucky to work with a great group of players & I look back on that season with lots of fond memories.

I was travelling to arenas I had been to as a kid, this time proudly wearing my Storm team jacket, being on the bench, the locker rooms, it was quite surreal at times.

We achieved our goal of making the playoffs & had great plans for the next season. Unfortunately, the team was sold, but it’s been no surprise to see Neil & Pach move on to bigger things.

2016/2017 EIHL season will always be my favourite ⚡️⚡️

Merry Christmas!

Had Mary and Joseph set off to Bethlehem today, they would have been met with countless Israeli checkpoints and a 30ft wall.

Neiler came to Manchester with a reputation as a tough guy on the ice, and a great community guy off it… he was exactly that and more!

I’ve never worked with someone as unique as Eric. He was the most positive person I’ve ever come across and his energy was infectious. He’d get the boys to tidy up a messy Pure Gym before our session began, and he took pride in everything he did. He played games when he shouldn’t have due to injury as we were short benched & he fought the league’s heavyweights; the ultimate team mate.

He had been to countless NHL training camps and was a seasoned AHL vet, yet he made me feel like a 10 year NHL strength coach and I’ll always be grateful for that.

He was the epitome of what Neil Russell and Omar Pacha were trying to build in Manchester and I’m forever thankful for being apart of that.

****PARENTS - Your child’s sports should have an off season****

When I grew up playing football, we always had an off season. No summer leagues, no tournaments, football would finish in the summer. I speak with a lot of parents about their child’s sport & how I believe it should be approached.

TAKE A BREAK FROM ONE SPORT AND DO ANOTHER.

I understand, your child really enjoys their chosen sport, and they want to do it with their friends all year round…. Here’s why i believe it’s the wrong approach and why they’ll thank you for it eventually.

1. Skill Development: Different sports emphasise various physical skills such as coordination, balance, strength, agility, and endurance which are expressed in different ways. By doing different sports, your child will develop a greater range of physical abilities.

2. Reduced Risk of Overuse Injuries: Focusing on one sport can lead to repetitive strain and overuse injuries at an early age which often is completely AVOIDABLE. Playing multiple sports allows different muscle groups to be used and gives some body parts time to rest and recover. For example, Ice Hockey players need to rest their groins as they are used so much in the season.

3. Avoiding Burnout: Specialising in one sport from a young age can quickly lead to burnout, where children lose interest and motivation. Multi-sport participation keeps their experience fresh and enjoyable. I have seen this first hand numerous times, and it always make me sad when I hear this with a child.

4. Long-term Athletic Development: Multi-sport participation can contribute to more well-rounded athletic development. Children can discover their strengths and preferences, which can help them choose to specialise in a sport later on. I was fortunate to work under Brett Davey, a great Welsh rugby player and coach who had played European Rugby AND European Football, attributing the long range vision used in football in helping with his rugby abilities.

It’s great when a child has a passion for sport and it’s all they want to do, and that’s needs to be encouraged. But it’s also important we manage their passion and their development for their long term benefit.

Any parents out there who have any questions, I’m always happy to answer them 💪🏻

The latest addition to my gym… a Safety Squat Bar.

As I’ve got older, I’ve realised training has become more about longevity, health & enjoyment over chasing big numbers.

I’ve been after a safety squat bar for awhile & came across this on Marketplace so jumped at it. Having had just one session I already know it will be one of my best buys.

The bar sits so much securely & comfortably ✅
The weight feels more stable ✅
Single leg work is safer ✅

I used to think it was the traditional bar or nothing for squatting, now I’m older & wiser (I hope 😂) I realise there’s a place for everything in your training 💪🏻
