Are you working hard but feel like youโ€™re not moving forward efficiently? One of the biggest mistakes in freestyle is a weak, slipping hand. If your pull lacks "grip" on the water, you are leaving massive speed on the table. Today, for Technique Tuesday, we continue our equipment series with a absolute game-changer: Hand Paddles.

In this video, Iโ€™ll show you how to use paddles to instantly improve your catch, feel the water resistance, and build the upper body strength needed for a faster, more powerful pull.

What youโ€™ll learn:
โœ… Maximize Water Feel: How paddles exaggerate the resistance, giving you better tactile feedback.
โœ… Fix Your Catch and Finish: Why paddles demand proper alignment throughout the propulsive phase.

THE CHALLENGE:
Add this into your next session:

4 x 100s as:50m Paddles Only: Focus on a strong catch, keeping the elbow high, and maintaining a smooth, connected pull. Focus on the feel.50m Full Stroke (No Paddles): Remove the paddles and try to replicate that same heavy, connected pressure on your forearms.

Focus on:

A clean hand entry, no slapping.

Constant water pressure throughout the pull.

Core engagement for stability.

There is nothing better than seeing hard work and technical drills turn into tangible results on race day. By dropping his pace from 2:29/100m to 2:16/100mโ€”while lowering his average heart rate by 21 bpmโ€”Steven achieved more speed with lower effort and complete control.

Top Tip Thursday- Fast Arms โ‰  Faster Swimming ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

This weeks top tip Thursday is built around one of the coaching cues Iโ€™ve been really enjoying giving to people recently โ€œyou want your arms to move the water, not move through the waterโ€ ๐Ÿ’ง

This effectively accounts for 90% of your propulsive power, if weโ€™re โ€œslipping throughโ€ you will never engage enough with the water to properly propel yourself forward ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐ŸŠโ€โ™€๏ธ

Whereas this concept will help to lock in, engage the lats, use the arms are relaxed hooks to move the water backwards, have a high distance per stroke etc etc. I have found this one small coaching cue to be really really useful in achieving 10+ aspects of good swimming without taking up too much brain space ๐Ÿง

Swim With Dan LTD Technique Tuesday: Isolate the Engine ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Ready to level up your power? Enter the Pull Buoy. By taking the legs out of the equation, we turn the spotlight entirely on your pull mechanics and body alignment.

Why we love it:

Instant Body Line: It lifts your hips to the surface, showing you exactly how horizontal you should be in full-stroke swimming.

Strength Isolation: Forces your lats and triceps to do the heavy lifting.

The "Slow-Mo" Effect: Gives you the stability to slow down and perfect that Early Vertical Forearm (EVF).

Pro-Tip: Don't just "ride" the buoy. Squeeze your legs together and keep your core tight. The buoy should rotate with your hipsโ€”don't let it keep your lower body flat while your shoulders move!

Volume Goal: Pulling usually accounts for 20% to 40% of a standard endurance session. Use it to build that relentless "front-end" power.
