【MORE IS A MYTH!】

I have received and reviewed thousands of CVs over the last few years; CVs 10-12 pages long!

Most people believe that having detailed information and long pages outlining eberything they have done works in their favour.

The truth is: No one has the time to read a CV that reads like Tolstoy’s War and Peace!

According to experts it only takes a Recruiter an average of 7 seconds to scan through a CV.

Remember, your CV should only be two pages maximum; only include relatively recent, applicable
experience that shows what transferrable skills you have learned and can carry over to your future role.

Focus on the things you achieved in the previous role and make sure this aligns to job requirement.

Any CV longer than 2 pages is way too long and chances are it’s full of unnecessary information.

【HOW TO EXPLAIN GAPS IN YOUR CV!】

CVs with many unexplained gaps have the potential of being overlooked by hiring managers.

Being open and honest about the gaps is very important in every job search.

Below are a few tips on how to explain the gaps:

1. ILLNESS – if the illness was over 10-15 years ago there is no need to explain it. However, if it is
recent and for a very long period then an explanation is required. You could write “Career Break – Long
term illness or a statement explaining that although you were ill for a long time; you are now ready to
resume work.

2. CARING FOR FAMILY- A simple statement such as “Career Break – Family Commitments” is
sufficient. You could expand and explain the commitments e.g. Maternity/Paternity Leave, Caring for sick family members etc.

3. TRAVELLING – “Career Break – Travelling” you could expand and include any work undertaken while
travelling or things you achieved.

4. TERMINATION OR REDUNDANCY – Briefly explain what you did during the break. It could be that you
took some courses, networked with people in your field via LinkedIn, proactively searched for
employment, volunteered or kept to date with changes in your industry. Explain what you did to remain
marketable.

A few points or a single line will suffice in a CV; the details can be reserved for the Interview.

In today's competitive job market, a well written CV and Cover Letter is the base requirement to be invited
to an interview.

✅Address it to the Hiring Manager – avoid addressing it to Sir / Madam. Society has since evolved and so
has personal identity.

✅A great Cover Letter should be tailored towards the job you are applying for. To do so, use the relevant keywords from the job description and person specification.
