So who else has a drawer full of customised tools?
Today it was a socket that had a bit too much OD, so it needed to go on a slight diet. Yes it would have been easy to order a slimmer one, but what else would you do if you’ve got a lathe 30 feet away and you want it done right now?

A lesson to everyone about component placement when designing PCBs.
It may work flawlessly from an electronic point of view, but how does it cope mechanically?
This QFP was placed on the edge of a PCB, with a protruding edge like a diving board. Then board was then used in a high vibration environment. The board protrusion was resonating with the vibrations and this was the result after just a few months.
At MHW we have re-designed the board to remove the protrusion, added two additional mounting holes, and changed to a QFN package.

Component failure of the day! Motor start capacitor burst. In fairness it's dated March '94 and has been installed outside in a not entirely waterproof (or spider proof) case.

Who's old enough to remember UV Erasable stuff? Lovely ceramics with quartz windows so you can see the die.

Sometimes you;ve just got to improvise. In this case it's making a giant iron tip for removing modules attached with castellated vias
