The Etihad Stadium is the location of the latest round of Premier League matches for Newcastle United as they face Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Saturday.
The Citizens come off the back of a midweek victory over Bristol City in the firth round of the FA Cup whereas the Magpies will be wanting to bounce back with a win following their gut-wrenching 2-0 defeat at the hands of Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Final last Sunday.
A brace from Kevin de Bruyne along with a strike from Phil Foden helped Manchester City ease to a 3-0 victory on Tuesday night which sets them up with a clash against Burnley who are currently managed by former Citizen defender Vincent Kompany. The victory over Bristol also extended their streak of successive away victories to five in all competitions.
Before their fifth round success, Pep Guardiola’s side cruised to a 4-1 victory at the Vitality Stadium against Bournemouth as they aim to keep in touching distance of Arsenal who lead the race for this seasons Premier League winners trophy. Despite just being five points behind the league leaders, the current champions will know that they cant afford to slip up in the remaining 13 games left to play as Manchester United are just six points behind them and have a game in hand.
Manchester City currently boast the best home record in this season’s Premier League campaign, so far they have secured 31 points from a possible 36. Their only fall backs this season being a 2-1 defeat by Brentford and a 1-1 draw against Everton. Their goal scoring record isn’t too shabby either, a total of 41 league goals on home turf is currently the most compared to any other team in England’s top four divisions.
The Citizens have beaten the Magpies in all of their last 13 premier league clashes on home soil and have scored in each of their last 28 league meetings with the North East outfit so they will have their sights set on victory come Saturday afternoon. In order to do that they will need to improve on their clean sheet record though, they have only been able to shut out their opponents on three occasions in their last 16 league games.
Its been a good season for the Magpies so far and the Geordie faithful were in fine voice as they packed out the capital on Sunday for their first Cup Final since 1999. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be for Eddie Howe’s side as they were beaten by Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United 2-0 thanks to goals from Casemiro (assisted by the officials) and Marcus Rashford.
Whilst winning silverware would have been a dream for everyone linked with Newcastle United, Eddie Howe has insisted that his players will not let their heartache from the final ruin their season ambition of qualifying for
European football next year.
Newcastle’s momentum has taken a bit of a hit over recent weeks, a run of just one victory in their last seven league matches has seen them drop out of the top four. If they defeat Manchester City on Saturday, it will end a run of four successive league games without a victory.
September 2001 was the last time Newcastle United beat Manchester City in the league, Alan Shearer scoring the winning goal on that occasion as Bobby Robson’s side ran out 1-0 winners at Maine Road.
Even though Newcastle’s recent form hasn’t been great, they are currently unbeaten in their last eight top-flight fixtures and in the reverse fixture earlier on in the season, they played out a entertaining 3-3 draw at St James’ Park so they know they have what it takes to give their hosts a run for their money.
Manchester City Team News: John Stones, Aymeric Laporte and Stefan Ortega will face late fitness tests if they are to be included in Saturdays squad. Ederson will be expected to feature as he chases his 100th clean sheet in the Premier League. Rico Lewis faces competition from Kyle Walker for the starting spot at right back. Erling Haaland will lead the line after being rested during the midweek FA Cup clash. Phil Foden will be hoping to retain his spot in the starting line-up alongside either Riyad Mahrez or Jack Grealish.
Newcastle United Team News: Nick Pope is legible for selection after serving his suspension which means that Lorius Karius will either drop to the bench or out of the squad. Matt Targett could return to the side in place of Dan Burn at left back following a lengthy lay off with injury. Anthony Gordon will face competition from Allan Saint-Maximin for the spot on the left flank, the latter has been in good form recently. Bruno Guimaraes is expected to be fit for selection which will give Eddie Howe a selection headache on who starts in the midfield trio. It is yet to be seen whether Eddie Howe will stick with the misfiring Callum Wilson up front or he will switch to Alexander Isak.
Sutty’s Match Prediction: Being realistic, I can’t see us coming away with a win on Saturday. Our lack of clinical threat in front of goal is worrying and I can’t see where the goals will come from. Our defence has been sloppy recently and with City being as ruthless as they can be, we will be lucky to come away from the Etihad with a share of the points. Don’t get me wrong, anything can happen with Newcastle and we could even sn**ch a victory but for my score prediction I’m going: Manchester City 2 Newcastle United 1.

Newcastle United Football Club News
We are the toon army load and proud we will deliver you news and gossip
Liverpool seen off Newcastle at St James’ Park on Saturday evening but despite the scoreline finishing 2-0 to the visitors, it doesn’t reflect on how the majority of the game panned out. Goals from Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo inside the first twenty minutes were enough to end the Magpies impressive unbeaten run.
Both managers made one change to their respective sides. Elliott Anderson earned his first Premier League start for the Magpies, he took the place of Joe Willock who was injured during last weeks draw against Bournemouth. Callum Wilson returned to the bench after a minor Hamstring injury, Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin featured despite going off at the Vitality Stadium. Virgil van Dijk returned to the Liverpool starting eleven in the place of Joel Matip.
The hosts had the first chance of the game after just a few minutes, Saint-Maximin slid Almiron in from behind but Allison acted fast and stood tall to deny the Paraguayan. Liverpool took the lead with just ten minutes on the clock and it was against the run of play. Alexander-Arnold launched a ball up the field before Nunez brought it down and smashed it beyond Pope. VAR did check it for “handball” but found nothing wrong with it. The visitors doubled their lead just seven minutes through Gakpo. Salah launched a ball over the Newcastle defence and the unmarked striker had plenty of time to control it and slide it underneath Pope. Things went from bad to worse for the Magpies when Pope was shown a straight red card for handling the ball outside the box. The real kick in the groin for the Magpies is that he will miss out the Carabao Cup Final because of it. Saint-Maximin went close for the hosts just as the clock reached the half hour mark, after running out of options in the midfield, he decided to go for it himself and Allison had to pull of a smart save to deny him. Despite going down to 10 men, the Magpies didn’t sit back and they nearly pulled a goal back with five minutes left to play in the first half. Trippier whipped a corner in which found the head of the giant Burn but his effort rattled the crossbar. HT Score Newcastle United 0 Liverpool 2.
Newcastle had a decent start to the second half. Saint-Maximin done well down the flank and drilled a low cross in for Isak but the Swede couldn’t properly control it and his effort whizzed over the bar. If Newcastle could convert their chances, they would have been back in it. Schar was the next Newcastle player to have an attempt at goal. He rose highest to make contact with Trippier’s corner but it sailed over the bar. Dubravka was called into action when he had to deny Nunez from getting a second. The Uruguayan latched onto a through ball and cut inside before unleashing a shot towards the Newcastle goal but the substitute keeper saved well. Schar can consider himself lucky that the visitors didn’t make the most of his sloppy play which handed the possession away. Robertson found himself on goal and instead of going for glory himself, he tried to lay it off to Salah but thankfully Big Burn was there to intercept it and put it to safety. With ten minutes to play, Salah had a go from the edge of the box but his effort was weak and easily gathered up by Dubravka. Newcastle had probably their best opportunity of the game to grab a goal back inside the final ten minutes. Gordon, who was released as a youngster by Liverpool, drove forward and fed it into Wilson who was unmarked and only had to finish it past the keeper but Allison was wise to it and pulled off another great stop. Jota missed a sitter in the 89th minute from six yards out when he found the end of a cross into the box. Liverpool had a couple of more chances in the final two minutes of the game but they couldn’t find a way through the gutsy Newcastle back line. Full Time Newcastle United 0 Liverpool 2.
Sutty’s Full Time Thoughts: Newcastle played better with ten men than when they had eleven on the pitch. It’s a shame that 15 minutes of sloppy mistakes in the first half cost us our unbeaten run. Our defence was nowhere to be seen for their two goals and Pope was distraught after what he done to get sent off. The former Burnley keeper has hardly put a foot wrong since signing for us and I hope the REAL fans will back him despite the mistake. Allan Saint-Maximin was the star player for me today, the Frenchman showed what he can do when he puts his mind to it. He just needs to be more consistent. Callum Wilson…another poor display when he came on, it was deja vu when Anthony Gordon played him through and he fluffed his lines…we all slated Chris Wood but god forbid anyone saying anything negative about Wilson. Anyway with the final next Sunday, we may have lost Pope but we do have Bruno back in the centre of the midfield who we have missed massively these past three games. It is concerning though how bad we are at making the most of the chances that we create. There is just no end product and we really should have had four or five goals from them. Despite the defeat, the Magpies STILL remain in fourth place. I’ll take that. Keep the faith folks! We played them off the park. It just wasn’t to be.
What’s Next? Newcastle have the small matter of the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United on Sunday 26th February in a 4:30pm KO. Liverpool travel to Selhurst Park on Saturday 25th February as they face Crystal Palace in a 7:45pm KO. Both matches are available on Sky Sports.
Newcastle United Line Up: N Pope, K Trippier © (63, J Murphy), S Botman, F Schar, D Burn, Joelinton (70, M Ritchie), E Anderson (23, M Dubravka) , S Longstaff, A Saint-Maximin, A Isak (63, C Wilson), M Almiron (63, A Gordon).

After witnessing Newcastle reach their first domestic cup final since 1999 on Tuesday night, St James’ Park is once more the venue as West Ham United make the long visit up north in the next round of the 2022-23 Premier League campaign.
Both sides will be looking to leave SJP with the three points for totally different reasons. A win for Newcastle will help them move one step closer to finishing the season in the top four whereas their opponents are looking to secure back to back victories as they aim to beat the drop.
Newcastle seen off Southampton on Tuesday night as they secured their spot in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on the 26th February. Joelinton scored the only goal of the game in the first leg at St Mary’s and in the return leg it was local lad Sean Longstaff who grabbed a first half brace to help them seal victory.
Eddie Howe’s Magpies are flying high right now, they go into Saturdays game with only two defeats in 27 competitive matches across all competitions this season. They have turned St James’ Park back into a fortress and a place that opposition teams dread to visit and their record proves it…they are undefeated in their last 15 home games. Liverpool were the last team to beat them at home back in April last year.
Their defence has seen them record a league-high 12 clean sheets so far this term and they have not conceded in their last six premier league fixtures. West Ham will be hoping to end that at the weekend, the Hammers have found the net eight times in their last nine matches.
Last week the Hammers ended a winless run of seven games as they overpowered fellow relegation contenders Everton 2-0 on home soil. They also recorded a victory over Derby County in the 4th Round of the FA Cup, goals from Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio either side of half time helped see them through and secured a place in the hat for the fifth round draw.
David Moyes’ side have won three out of their last five matches in all competitions including one draw which will give them some momentum as they aim to move away from the relegation zone. West Ham can’t afford to slip up as they currently sit in 16th place and only one point above the bottom three. They will be optimistic for their trip to the north east though, in their last four games at St James’ Park they have claimed seven points, most notably in December 2018 and and August 2021 where the score line finished 3-0 and 4-2 respectively.
Newcastle Team News: Bruno Guimaraes will miss out on Saturday’s visit of West Ham due to picking up a straight red card in the second leg of the Semi Final mid week. Alexander Isak could be out of contention due to concussion protocols, the Swedish striker had to be withdrawn against Southampton after being walloped in the head from a James Ward-Prowse free kick. Joelinton could return to the centre of the park in Bruno’s absence which means that Anthony Gordon could be in line to make his debut, that’s if Allan Saint-Maximin doesn’t get the nod.
West Ham Team News: Maxwel Cornet, Gianluca Scamacca and Kurt Zouma are all on the injury list so they will miss out. New signing Danny Ings went off on his debut for the Hammers last week with a knee injury so he is a doubt. Vladimir Coufal and Declan Rice are expecting to be named in the starting eleven in place of Ben Johnson and Flynn Downes.
Sutty’s Match Prediction: A recent mini revival from the Hammers will give them some hope of causing an upset at SJP on Saturday but they will have to be at their best to beat the home side with the best defensive unit in the league. Guimaraes will be a miss but the Magpies have more than enough quality in their side to deal with his absence. For me I reckon Longstaff or Joelinton will find the net as we get the victory. My score prediction being Newcastle United 3 West Ham United 0.

Happy New Year everyone! Newcastle United’s first game of the new calendar year begins with a trip to the capital as they face league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Coverage for Tuesdays game is available on Sky Sports Premier League.
It’s hard to believe that in the space of just 12 months, Newcastle have gone from a team that was 19th in the league to challenging for the title or at least the champions league.
Yes, the takeover and wealth from the new owners might have a small part to play in it with the purchases of Kieran Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes, Dan Burn and Nick Pope to name a few, but the majority of the praise needs to be directed at Eddie Howe and his backroom staff. He has totally rejuvenated the atmosphere in the dressing room and created a team full of warriors who want to fight for their place in the squad. He has turned the likes of Joelinton and Miguel Almiron into world beaters and made them arguably some of the best players in the league and even the world.
Anyway, back to the preview. The hosts for Tuesday nights fixture ended 2022 with a 4-2 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion to move three points closer to the title. Newcastle on the other hand we’re frustratingly held to a 0-0 draw at home to Leeds United, a match which saw tempers flare at the visitors dirty and time wasting tactics.
Mikel Arteta has showed a lot of faith in his younger players this season and it sure has paid off. Four of them (Eddie Nketiah, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard) found the back of the net in their latest outing at the Amex Stadium. Kaoru Mitoma and Evan Ferguson brought some hope back for the hosts but that was all scuppered when Mitoma had another goal ruled out for offside for the tiniest of margins. The gunners with their 14th top flight win of the season along with Manchester City dropping points at Everton meant they could celebrate the New Year seven points clear at the top of the standings.
340 miles up the road at a very rainy St James’ Park, Newcastle couldn’t break down a stubborn Leeds defense. Despite the Magpies having 59% of the possession, they couldn’t find away past Meslier. Chris Wood, Joelinton, Miguel Almiron and Sean Longstaff all had chances to put the ball in the back of the net but couldn’t capitalize. Even Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson had little affect when they were brought into the game with half an hour to go. Three points against Leeds would have brought the Magpies level on points against Manchester City but they will be more than happy to occupy the final position on the podium for the time being.
Despite not picking up the win, Eddie Howe’s side won’t be too disheartened as they have only lost one game this season, that coming at Anfield when the Scousers scraped a 2-1 victory thanks to some questionable officiating. Since that defeat back in August, they are unbeaten in 12 Premier League matches.
Arsenal Team News: Mikel Arteta is likely to stick to the same starting eleven that he can rely on despite the quick turnaround in fixtures. Emile Smith Rowe has returned to training after groin surgery but he will only be named on the bench if he is passed fit. Eddie Nketiah has filled the role usually held by Gabriel Jesus nicely so he is a certainty to retain his place in the starting eleven. Reiss Nelson and Gabriel Jesus are the only two guaranteed absentees for Tuesday night.
Newcastle United Team News: Alexander Isak is still not quite fit to return to the match day squad but Eddie Howe has said that it is only a matter of weeks before he returns. Jonjo Shelvey is ruled out with yet another injury, this time it’s his calf and faces up to eight weeks on the sidelines. It is yet to be known if Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin will feature from the start, both players coming on for the last half an hour during the draw against Leeds. Joelinton and Miguel Almiron have both been outstanding out wide recently. Joe Willock will want to give a good performance against his former side.
Sutty’s Match Prediction: Both sets of fans will be feeling positive that their respective clubs can come away with the three points on Tuesday. Arsenal do have the home advantage and they have a perfect record against the Magpies at the Emirates. They will be concerned that clean sheets have been hard to come by at home. Newcastle on the other hand now have a team full of fighters and fear no one. I’ve got a sneaky feeling Newcastle will nab the three points but I’d also be happy with a draw. My score prediction for this game: Arsenal 0 Newcastle United 1. Howay the lads!!

Proper football is back after the pointless international break! Personally, I hope it doesn’t return but that’s just my opinion.
Eddie Howe’s side make the trip to Fulham this weekend who currently occupy 6th place in the table after a decent start to the campaign and they will be hoping to continue their solid start to this year’s competition after winning three games out of the last five in the Premier League.
A certain former Newcastle United player will be looking to prove that letting him go was the wrong decision. Aleksandar Mitrovic is on fire for the London outfit so far this season, finding the net six times in seven appearances. The Serbian International has flourished since he was loaned out in 2018 by Newcastle who were under the guidance of the Spanish waiter…I mean Rafa Benitez. Mitrovic made the switch to Fulham permanently in July 2018 after an impressive loan spell. Oh by the way, the “icon” Rafa also decided to get rid of Ivan Toney…look how that worked out!
In their last game before the international break, The Cottagers dispatched fellow newly promoted side Nottingham Forest 3-2. Things didn’t start off well for Marco Silva’s side as Taiwo Awoniyi put the home side ahead after 11 minutes of play. Tosin Adarobioyo levelled things up in the 54th minute and the turnaround had begun. Goals from Joao Palhinha and Harrison Reed put the visiting side 3-1 ahead after 60 minutes before Lewis O’Brien scored a consolation goal in the 77th minute. Their star striker Mitrovic, made it two games where he has drew blanks this season as he failed to get on the scoresheet.
A victory for Fulham on Saturday against the Magpies could see them climb into the top four if Brighton get defeated by Liverpool and Manchester United fail to beat their neighbors. Fulham have won 12 top flight fixtures against the Geordies so they know that it is achievable.
Newcastle on the other hand have found victories hard to come by so far this season. Their only win so far was the opening day victory over Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park. Five of their last six games have ended in a draw with just one defeat. Things could be worse though, Eddie Howe’s side is still in the top half of the table despite only picking up a point last time out against his former side Bournemouth. Newcastle have had some bu****it VAR decisions against them though which has ruled out goals/goal scoring opportunities and ultimately cost them any chances of picking up three points. The Magpies have done well recently when they have faced Fulham down the road, they have won both their last two games in the capital with an aggregate score of 6-0. However, they have never completed a hat-trick of victory’s at Craven Cottage. A win for Newcastle can take them up to six place if other results also go their way and depending on how the referees feel!
Team news for Fulham: Antonee Robinson will miss out with an ankle problem so Tim Reame is set to continue his run in the side as his replacement. Harry Wilson and Manor Solomon are also out with knocks. Summer signing Palhinha is suspended after racking up five yellow cards. It is yet to be determined who will fit alongside Harrison Reed and who will slot behind the inform Aleksandar Mitrovic who found the net four times during the two games he played for Serbia during the recent break.
Team news for Newcastle: Club record signing Alexander Isaac picked up a knock during the international break for Sweden and is currently unclear on how serious it is. Chris Wood also picked up a rib injury for New Zealand. Some positive news for Eddie Howe is that Jonjo Shelvey is close to returning after a lengthy spell on the treatment table, Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes are hoping to be involved in some capacity. Ryan Fraser will be wanting to retain his place in the side after picking up good form during the break.
Sutty’s Match Prediction: Both sides are playing well so it could go either way. If neither Callum Wilson or Alexander Isaac feature then chances will be hard to come by for the Magpies and they will have to find goals via other outlets. Mitrovic will be wanting to score against his former side though and continue his form so Fulham will be hoping to give him plenty of opportunities to put the ball away. I’d like to see Elliot Anderson get a proper run in the side and be named in the starting eleven, for me he is hands down better than Joe Willock and Sean Longstaff but that’s just my opinion. I have two score predictions: either a 1-1 draw or a sneaky 1-0 win for Newcastle.
The Citizens were in town this weekend as last years Premier League Champions and current league leaders visited the cathedral on the top of the hill…of course you all know I refer to the magnificent St James’ Park.
Even Pep Guardiola has hailed the ground as one of the best stadiums in the Premier League and it’s rejuvenated atmosphere. Speaking ahead of the game, he said “Newcastle away is always an incredible environment. The fans…it’s one of the best stadiums since I have been here in England. I know how they support the team. It’s a good test for us.” He has also praised his opposite number this weekend in past interviews stating that “we know what a good manager he is. They are a good team with good players and a top manager so we will go there and have to work hard for each other to win
the game”.
As Expected, Eddie Howe named an unchanged side that drew against Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend. Ryan Fraser took his place on the bench as he returns to fitness whilst Dan Burn once more filled in at left back for the absent Matt Targett who was unable to shake off his knock. Manchester City named a strong side that included Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne. John Stones partnered Nathan Ake in the centre of defence.
The game got underway and it was the visitors who started the better between the sides. Rodri registered the first effort of the game with a shot from distance but it never troubled Nick Pope as he watched it sail over the bar. The Citizens were celebrating a couple of minutes later though as Ilkay Gundogan bundled the ball home after finding a way through Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar. Nick Pope made a fine save just after ten minutes to stop Kevin De Bruyne converting from a Erling Haaland pass. City kept up the pressure as they pushed for a second goal, Nick Pope once more having to be alert to stop an effort from Phil Foden. Miguel Almiron had a golden opportunity to level things up for the home side just before the 20minute mark, Allan Saint-Maximin done well to cross the ball in but the Paraguayan international blasted it over. He redeemed himself just before the half hour mark though despite the Assistant Referees best efforts, Maxi crossed the ball in from out wide and this time the former made no mistake by burying it home. The Linesman originally chalking it out for offside before VAR made their first useful contribution of its kind by overruling the decision and letting it stand. Newcastle didn’t take their foot off the gas there and with just over 5 minutes to go before half time, Callum Wilson tucked the ball away past Ederson. Newcastle had an appeal for a penalty waved away as the game entered extra time on the first half when John Stones clattered Fabian Schar in the box, if that was anywhere else on the pitch, it would have been a foul. Half Time Score Newcastle United 2 – Manchester City 1.
The Magpies started the second half the same way they ended the first, battling for every ball and fighting for each other. With just under ten minutes played in the second half, Newcastle found themselves with an ideal opportunity to extend their lead when Allan Saint-Maximin drew a foul from Jaoa Cancelo just outside the box. Who would step up to take it? None other than Captain Fantastic himself Kieran Trippier who smashed it into the back of the net whilst leaving Ederson stranded. Erling Haaland pulled a goal back for the visitors just after the hour mark from close range. Rodri headed the ball across the box and their new signing tucked it away. Three minutes later the scores were level, Kevin De Bruyne with a smart assist for Bernardo Silva who clips the ball past the Newcastle stopper. Things looked like they were going to get a lot worse for the hosts when Kieran Trippier was shown a straight red card from Jarred Gillett for bringing down Kevin De Bruyne as he broke away. VAR once more intervened and advised that the Aussie ref overturned his decision for a yellow. Nick Pope continued to show why he is one of England’s best shot stoppers by making a string of fine saves and interceptions as the game reached its final stages. Despite a lengthy five minute of stoppage time, United’s defence held firm and the full time whistle blew. Score at Full Time: Newcastle United 3 – Manchester City 3.
Sutty’s Full Time Thoughts: How some referees get picked for matches I do not know! As I tweeted earlier on during the day, the standard of officiating in this league is sh*te. A huge statement from Eddie Howe’s boys this afternoon. Not many people would have had us to score against the Premier League champions, never mind three goals! What a game for the neutrals too, six goals and both teams giving their all. Newcastle fully deserved to come away with a share of the points today and Manchester City will perhaps count themselves lucky to leave Tyneside with a share of points. I’m buzzing for wor Miggy, the goal for him is something that he has deserved for a long time. Allan Saint-Maximin had a belter of a game, if this is what a day in the Metro Centre giving gifts out to fans can do then get it done every week! This is what the man can do. Nick Pope, let’s get this man trending again! He pulled off a number of key saves to keep the hosts in it. Next up for the Magpies is a trip to Tranmere in the cup during the week and let’s hope they can keep the momentum going. Eddie Howe’s Black and White Army!
