Seasonal guide

* Spring (March–May): Bass, Pollack, Wrasse, early Mackerel.

* Summer (June–August): Mackerel, Bass, Garfish, Scad, Wrasse, Conger, Bull Huss.

* Autumn (September–November): Excellent Bass fishing, Pollack, Whiting begin to appear.

* Winter (December–February): Whiting, Dogfish, Pouting, Flatfish, Conger.

If you’re fishing around Newquay, Cornwall, these are the main sea species you’re likely to catch throughout the year:

Common species

* Bass – One of the most sought-after fish. Best from late spring to autumn around beaches, estuaries, and rocky marks.

* Pollack – Found around rocks, reefs, and kelp beds. Great sport on lures.

* Mackerel – Abundant from late spring through early autumn. Easy to catch on feathers from piers, rocks, or boats.

* Ballan Wrasse – Strong fighters found around rocky ground and kelp.

* Corkwing Wrasse – Common on rough ground during warmer months.

* Dogfish (Lesser Spotted Dogfish) – Very common after dark on many beaches.

* Conger Eel – Usually caught at night from rock marks or wrecks.

* Bull Huss – Regular catches from rough ground and deeper water.

* Pouting – Common on beaches and around harbour walls.

* Whiting – Best during autumn and winter.

* Poor Cod – Often caught over mixed ground.

* Scad (Horse Mackerel) – Summer visitor.

* Garfish – Surface-feeding fish during summer.
