So good to welcome Sensei Jaz Magill to PRD SKC last evening, she had travelled over the border to train with us. Jaz is an instructor at Ataru KUGB SKC, in Market Drayton Shropshire. It was a pleasure to have her company, and we hope she returns to visit us again in the future.

Great to travel to Merthyr Tydfil Shotokan Karate Academy last Tuesday evening, for their course and grading with Sensei Frank Brennan, 8th Dan KUGB. Fabulous welcome from Chris, Matthew, and other members of the club. Also great to see my good friend Sensei Kevin O’Neill 6th Dan, the Welsh KUGB Coach. Another Master Class by Sensei Brennan, and an in depth analysis of Kata “ Nijushiho “ fantastic nights training.

Powys Red Dragon SKC - KUGB held its first grading of 2026 under the expert eye of KUGB Chief Instructor Sensei Frank Brennan 8th Dan, last evening.

Once again, the emphasis was on good posture, correct stances, powerful delivery of technique’s, a good attitude, and determination. A hard challenging training session was enjoyed by everyone.

We welcomed Sensei Clive King, and one of his students, John John from Tekki KUGB SKC Aberystwyth, who had travelled to train and grade with us.

Twenty three students successfully graded after strict scrutiny from Sensei Brennan, and are now able to progress further in their studies of our unique style of KUGB Shotokan Karate. Congratulations to everyone.

So good to see “Powys Red Dragon” KUGB SKC, family 5th Kyu students, father Richard Burrows, and sons Logan and Mason Burrows, along with 1st Dan Sensei Gwennan Meek, and Club Instructor Sensei Graham Jennings attend a free Welsh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 Region KUGB course at Bargoed Leisure Centre today.

We were very fortunate to have been instructed by Sensei Greg Hegarty, 6th Dan, KUGB grading examiner, and ex World, and European, Kumite Champion.

There was an excellent attendance at this event today, two fantastic challenging sessions enjoyed by all. Thank you Sensei Hegarty, and KUGB Wales for facilitating this wonderful course.

Great to see Gwennan Meek, and myself, both re selected to the KUGB Central Region Kata Squad this afternoon, 25.01.2026, at Grantham. Everybody! irrespective of their grade, must demonstrate a Heian Kata to Sensei Brennan KUGB 8th Dan, and meet the required standard to become part of this prestigious group of Karate students. All sessions, usually eight, must be attended through the year at a number of locations in the central region area.
The process is repeated every January, old friendship’s are renewed, and new Kata Squad members welcomed, there were in excess of 100 students in attendance today.
Many thanks to parent chauffeur Mr Andrew Meek today, a 310 mile round trip. We’re very lucky to have such supportive people associated with our Karate club.

Last evening PRD SKC were delighted to welcome Sensei Dean Akerman, to provide a course at our club, on our last session of 2025. Sensei Akerman is a 5th Dan KUGB Wales international competitor, and the chief Instructor of Okami KUGB SKC in Blackwood, South Wales.

Three other Okami Dan grades, Gary Wheeler, 2nd Dan, Misty Hutton 1st Dan, and Jonathon Jones 1st Dan, had accompanied Dean to train with us at Newtown, and had made the long journey to be with us, it was our pleasure to welcome them all.

Sensei Akerman provided a fantastic nights training, including basics, and then some tremendous sparing drills, that all the students, thoroughly enjoyed.

Sensei Akerman has supported our club from its inception, and was at our first club grading in 2023. We would like to take the opportunity to thank him, and his students, for helping us develop the club further.

Introducing four new junior members of PRD SKC, and very smart they look too! They are from left, Betsi, Oliver, Riley, and Jake. They are part of a cohort of seven new students who have begun their Shotokan Karate journey. They have settled in well, and are making excellent progress!
