There are many ways that we can integrate this elongate and hinging strategy into our day from picking up our kids' toys or moving boxes to doing the dishes or picking up the laundry basket, etc. This is a great habit to get in to help promote overall core strength and one of the many strategies we often give to our clients during core rehab.☺️

In 1912, Joseph Pilates came to England, where he worked as a self-defence instructor for detectives at Scotland Yard.

At the outbreak of World War 1, Joe was interned in the Knockaloe Internment Camp on the Isle of Man with other German nationals. During this time, Joe began to teach the ‘enemy aliens’ his system of exercise. He rigged springs to hospital beds, enabling bedridden patients to exercise against resistance, an innovation that led to his later equipment designs.

When a flu epidemic struck England in 1918, killing thousands of people, not a single one of Joe’s trainees died. This, he claimed, testified to the effectiveness of his method, now known as ‘Pilates’.

Today, on Remembrance Sunday, we remember those who lost their lives during battle...the brave soldiers who fell during the First World War and those who have died in conflicts since.

We will be observing the 2 minute silence at 11am during all courses at today at the Body Control Pilates Centre and in our homes.

We will remember them. We will not forget.

Invite and suggest......gentle movement for chronic pain.

Chronic Pain & Exercise Reactions: I was explaining to a client this week how the body can react when you’ve been in pain for a long time and then you ask it to start exercising. Sometimes, the body and mind are not really too keen on the idea. Here’s why:

Have you ever had a day when you’ve been in a bad mood? Nothing goes right and everything seems to annoy you. You are irritated. Now, imagine someone keeps tapping you repeatedly on your shoulder asking you to go for a walk, go shopping, clean the house, and so on. The more they tap you on your shoulder, the more irritated you become. The more the nervous system gets annoyed. You just want to be left alone. That’s how the body and mind feel when it is pushed into something when it’s in chronic pain 😢. It shuts down more.

If, however, we don’t tap on the shoulder, and ask gently and politely instead - the outcome is often very different. This is why I insist on little and often with my Movement programs. We invite and suggest to the body that it might like to explore movement at its own pace and rhythm. This rhythm is often slow and mindful. It’s calming to the system. Pacing needs to be determined by you, not by some predetermined plan of a physio or doctor.

When you gently open the door to exercise rather than being pushed through it, the nervous system starts to feel safe, it naturally calms down and you can start to enjoy movement - as opposed to fear it 😊. Have a great weekend 🥳
