Yesterday when I was training a lady said to me...⁣

“Sorry I’m just in awe, I love it when you’re training when I’m here, it’s so inspiring!”⁣

It literally took me by surprise, and it made my day! ⁣

People often ask me why I train so hard. I don’t play sport or compete. I’m crap at sport, I’m too short, too slow and too wonky (crying shame for Oly Lifting 😭) but I love to be strong, to see what I can achieve, to see how I can push myself mentally.⁣

It was so lovely to hear that I inspired this lady to keep training. I don’t ever think what I do is particularly impressive, I just do what I can do. But I love it 💕⁣

So whatever the reason you may train remember you just may be inspiring the next person to you! ⁣

WINDMILLS 🌟⁣

This is a superb exercise for athletes and general population. As I always harp on about it’s got tons of BANG FOR YOUR BUCK 💥💥💥💥

🔹 Strengthens the abdominals and obliques ⁣
🔹 Stretches the hips, hamstrings, glutes and quadratus lumborum ⁣
🔹 Increases shoulder stability ⁣

1. To perform this movement grab a kettlebell and push press over head, lock out and keep the kettlebell touching the forearm. Take the feet a little wider than shoulder width and turn to the opposite side to the kettlebell. Keep your eyes on the kettlebell! ⁣

2. Going into a hip hinge shift the hips back and to the side to create a stretch in the QL and obliques. Slide the available hand down the opposite leg palm facing out, keeping both the legs as straight as possible. ⁣

3. Bracing the core, exhale as you windmill yourself back up to your starting position. ⁣

This movement can help stretch and strengthen the QL and piriformis - muscles which can often be responsible for back pain. ⁣

As well as developing strength I like this movement as an active recovery too, very light load and a few reps between sets of hip thrusts or sumo deadlifts for instance. ⁣

The coaching tip I used this week with a client was to stick your butt out like you’re trying to stop traffic 💥⁣

If you’re new to the movement perform higher reps until you have perfect form. Then try on a lower rep range to develop strength. I’m performing 4 x 4 with 16kg here, approximately 30% of my body weight. ⁣

CABLE PULL THROUGH 🍑 ⁣

This movement is great for learning the hip hinge technique and for learning to drive the hips into extension. ⁣

It’s easier to learn than a kettlebell swing and it allows us to load the posterior chain without the compression on the spine (such as an RDL or Back Squat). ⁣

1. Start with feet slightly wider than shoulder width, and push the knees out. ⁣

2. Take a step forwards so you have tension on the cable machine.⁣

3. Keep the chest open by retracting the shoulders and keep the pelvis in posterior tilt by engaging the core and ‘tucking the lower ribs in’. ⁣

The coaching tip I like to use with clients is to task them to imagine their lower ribs are wearing a pair of trouser braces which are attached to their pelvis. This stops them reaching hip flexion or extension by using their lumbar spine. Maintaining a neutral spine and position with the rib cage. ⁣

4. It’s a forwards and backwards motion, not an up and down motion like a squat. So push your hips back like you’re trying to tap the cable stack with your glutes.⁣

5. As in all hinge movements your head follows your hinge. Keep the chin tucked -that way you’re less likely to hyperextend the neck. ⁣

Learning how to dissociate your hips from your lumbar spine is vital to perform the larger lifts safely. ⁣

This is an accessory lift, therefore is best performed as an A.3, B or C exercise depending on the training age of the lifter. ⁣

Don’t aim for loads of weight here, this exercise is best performed between the 8-15 rep range, again, depending on the training age and competence of the lifter. ⁣

20 MINUTE WORKOUT 💥⁣⁣

Today I was short on time and wanted to get some movement in. I LOVE this exercise and for the time I had today it worked perfectly. ⁣⁣

Short on time ⏰ or the gym completely packed? Choose an exercise that hits multiple muscles and multiple planes if possible. (Frontal, Transverse, Sagittal..) ⁣⁣

The Landmine Squat to Rotational Press is superb for this type of workout because: ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
- it is multi planar ⁣⁣
- it hits legs, core and upper body ⁣⁣
- it requires explosive power from the legs which torches calories ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
2 x warm up sets and then working sets of 10 X 5 each side⁣

CLIENT PROGRESS 🌟⁣

This is Cat performing the Low Pulley Row bilaterally. I really like this movement as it recruits more muscle than a seated version, it encourages the client to stabilise and brace through the trunk and starts to introduce the hip hinge movement too. So there’s loads of bang for your buck here! ⁣

Cat has been training for 3 months so far and is seeing superb results.⁣

Dropping a fantastic 7kg and 26.5cm across the body. Up til now she has committed to training 3 times per week.. but her new program progresses her to 4 times per week as she has started to love training! 💥⁣

Clare came to me with early onset Osteoporosis and multiple fractured discs in her T spine. She was a marathon runner, but had never done the appropriate weight training she needed to support her running. ⁣

Unfortunately this resulted in injury and she was told she wouldn’t be able to run again. ⁣

With the support of her physio (I work with the amazing Rachel Burr in Nottingham) we have managed to increase Clare's muscle mass and strength drastically over the past 8 months. She is now far more stable and can now run without pain! Clare will only ever run very short durations due to her Osteoporosis, but running at all was huge progress for Clare, which she never imagined she would achieve. ⁣

Use weight training to support you during your favourite sport or hobby. It really can work magic 💫⁣
