All to often we fall into the trap of BIG flies for BIG fish! On its day, said mantra does work, alas it's not always the case...
For example, summer fishing for bass:
They're a stunning saltwater predator that can be found all along the UK's coastlines, estuaries and harbours- and for a big percentage of the year!
They offer both the novice and veteran fly angler fantastic sport, giving thumping takes and long runs; equally they taste delicious should you wish to take a fish of legal size for a BBQ on the beach!
What differs with the changing seasons is the fishes attitude to the food items available, and in turn the anglers ability to catch them!
Chunky, flashy clousers stripped fast might work well when there's an abundance of sandeel present, but should the terns not be diving and the chasing mackerel somewhat inconspicuous by their absence, look for smaller prey like shrimps and sand fleas and match your fly pattern accordingly!
Rodney Wevill shows us a solid looking bass below, taken on a very small beaded fly which was actually intended for mullet!
