Blue Club Chess Club

It was a great night at the mighty Blue Club on Monday with both casual games from the regulars and some new faces, and the 2nd team taking on Bolton 3.

Match report Blue Club 2 vs Bolton 3:

On the bottom 2 boards, Shiju and Rob were the first to finish.
Shiju, who arrived late, started 30 mins down on the clock but managed to find a swift and crushing attack on his opponent to make the game 1-0 to Blue Club

Rob played a London-y queens gambit transposition with two knights and after a queenside bishop for knight exchange on c3 his opponent launched the kingside pawns forward and managed to cramp Rob up a bit before he unwound at the cost of a pawn. His opponent then left his queen in front of his king in the centre so he had a nice e4 break combined with a couple of nasty pins which left Rob up a piece and his opponents king very exposed. His opponent resigned shortly after. 2-0.

Next was Chris who played an opponent that outgraded him by 200 elo. His opponent castled queen side and Chris sent an avalanche of pieces to attack the now vulnerable king. This was too much for his opponent and Chris managed to get a great attacking win. 3-0

Next up was Jake who won a pawn early in the game but at the expense of his king getting hunted out by all of his opponents pieces, however, Jake defended well, managed to trade off the queens and his opponent had no more attack. Jake then converted the pawn up position into a winning endgame and his opponent resigned making it 4-0 to Blue Club.

Jon started off the game strong with a great position against his opponent, but under time pressure made a few too many mistakes and ultimately lost the game. 4-1

Robin was the last to finish with both players playing an intense game with only 2 knights and 2 pawns each by the end game. Robins opponent got to a position where he had 2 passed pawns vs robins 1. The game looked drawn or possibly in favour of his opponent but his opponent ran out of time and Robin won to make the final score an incredible 5-1 to Blue Club.

26.01.2026 Heywood 1 vs Blue Club 2

After not posting for a while we are back with a match report in the new year.

First game to end was Robin who swapped his two rooks for his opponents Queen early on but ended up getting his knight pinned to his queen and eventually resigned the game.
1-0 to Haywood

Next game to end was Jake who won a pawn early in the game and precisely converted this into an endgame with a rook and 5 pawns vs a rook and 4. He then used this advantage to win another pawn and his opponent resigned.

Rob played a very aggressive game with a strong attack on the king side, however he missed a vital counterattack from his opponent and hung mate in 1.
2-1 to Haywood

Dan B swapped off his 2 knights for 2 bishops early on but lost a pawn during the process, however he defended valiantly and his bishop was on a strong square so the players agreed to a draw.
2.5-1.5

Jon and his opponent played a slow, closed position in which every pawn was still on the board except the f file. However both players realised there was no way through and agreed to a draw.

It all comes down to Armand on the top board. Armand early on got into a position with a bishop pair vs a bishop and knight and put a lot of pressure on his opponents centre pawn. After eventually winning the pawn and trading off some pieces. Both players had a rook, an opposite coloured bishop but Armand was a pawn up. With both players below 5 minutes, both players made a few mistakes but after around 100 moves, Armand found a way to promote his pawn, win the game and secure the draw for Blue Club.
