EFL Uncovered Sky Bet League Two Round Up:

Accrington Stanley 1-1 Gillingham: If you’d offered Accrington a point against Gillingham on the opening day, they may just have taken it. In what was an even game, Tyler Walton lit it up after 67 minutes, when he ran past two defenders, took another touch, and rolled it into the bottom corner off the post to give Stanley a dream start to their season. However, an Armani Little curling corner was headed past his own keeper by Stanley defender Devon Matthews on 79 minutes. While both teams threw caution to the wind to try to find a winner, they could only muster an opening day draw.

Barnet 0-2 Fleetwood Town: After seven years outside the EFL, Barnet fell to defeat in their return, losing 2-0 at The Hive to Fleetwood Town. Barnet had a good go from the off, but unfortunately, goalkeeper Owen Evans hadn’t read the script. He was caught out by Will Davies outside the area, who rounded him and tapped into the emptiest of nets to put the Cod Army into the lead. Six minutes into the second half, Ryan Graydon’s curling effort was saved by Owen Evans, as he tried to atone for his error, but unfortunately for him, there was captain Elliott Bonds to tap home to send the away side into raptures. Three points for Fleetwood, but for Barnet, they’re going to have to get rid of the mistakes.

Bristol Rovers 0-1 Harrogate Town: An opening day upset as a potential relegation candidate in Harrogate, put their big boy pants on, and upset the League Two apple cart, beating Bristol Rovers 1-0. Bristol Rovers started off as the better team, but in the second half, Harrogate turned it on, and well deserved their lead, which was given to them by Stephen Duke-McKenna, the Guyana international lifting the ball over goalkeeper Luke Southwood, after latching onto a through ball by Bryn Morris. Harrogate held on, and maybe on this first showing, we should all change our thoughts about Harrogate this season.

Cambridge United 1-0 Cheltenham Town: Cambridge fared better than fellow relegated side Rovers, and beat Cheltenham Town on their return to the fourth tier. U’s were dominant throughout the game, Dom Ball missing a big chance after 15 minutes. Jake Eastwood had to work to keep Cambridge at least level in this one, making a big save from George Miller. The pressure kept building at The Abbey, and Cambridge were rewarded after 59 minutes. Liam Bennett’s cross from the right found Sullay Kaikai in the area, his effort was saved by Joe Day, but it fell to Louis Appere who fired home the rebound.

Chesterfield 1-0 Barrow: Chesterfield made a winning start to the season, beating Barrow 1-0. Chesterfield were very much in charge in the first half, after a quiet start, with Armando Dobra and Will Grigg missing big chances early on. Dilan Markanday also nearly opened the scoring with a curling shot, but then Markanday did get his season off to a flyer, when his near-post header from Dylan Duffy’s cross deceived Will Stanway with a deflection. Barrow had their chances on the break, including one right at the end when Innes Cameron’s shot was saved by the legs of Zach Hemming. Chesterfield held on to this one, a big win to kick things off.

Colchester United 1-1 Tranmere Rovers: Colchester and Tranmere played out a good match, and it ended up with a share of the spoils for both sides. Tranmere took a 15th-minute lead when Connor Jennings swept a low shot past Matt Macey from close range after Cameron Norman had headed Richie Smallwood’s pass into the area, as Colchester failed to clear a corner. It was nearly 2-0 nine minutes later, Omari Patrick’s brilliant free-kick saved by Macey. Colchester then came into the game a bit more, Jaden Williams and then Will Goodwin narrowly missing chances, before they then equalised towards the end, when Kyreece Lisbie picked up Jack Tucker’s pass, before lifting the ball into the top corner of the net for his first goal for the club.

Grimsby Town 3-0 Crawley Town: If Crawley thought it’d be plain sailing returning to League Two, they were poorly mistaken, as they suffered a crushing defeat to Grimsby. Kieran Green was brought down inside the area for the Mariners, and Jaze Kabia converted on his debut to have a dream start at the Lincolnshire club. The Mariners doubled their advantage on the half-hour, a cross from Charles Vernam was met by the head of Cameron McJannet. Kabia hit the bar on the stroke of half time, which would have killed the game, but in the second half, it was stone dead, Evan Khouri wrapped it up after a couple of attempts were blocked.

Milton Keynes Dons 0-0 Oldham Athletic: Talking of dead games, this one barely even started, as new boys Oldham Athletic took a point from supposed league favourites MK Dons. There was only one attempt on target all game, with neither side finding a decisive breakthrough. The only shot on target was from Mike Fondop, whose strike was kept out by Craig MacGillivray, but in truth, the home side were poor, and again, do we think twice about their ambitions this season? For Oldham, a good point in their return to the EFL.

Salford City 1-3 Crewe Alexandra: An entertaining first half, where all the goals were scored, as Crewe won at the Peninsula Stadium. Ben Woodburn missed an early penalty for the home side, before Crewe took the lead after eight minutes. A goalmouth scramble eventually was put into his own net by Kadeem Harris. His debut became even more eventful though, when he scored at the right end this time. Set up by Kallum Cesay, he found the bottom corner of Tom Booth’s goal, and Salford were level. But two goals at the end of the first half proved crucial. Both came from Conor Thomas, the first being a close range finish from a Josh March cross, and the second being a tap in when Salford’s keeper Matty Young failed to deal with Tommi O’Riley’s shot. Crewe hit the bar in the second half, but they settled for three.

Shrewsbury Town 0-0 Bromley: Our second 0-0 draw of the day was at least more eventful than the other one, when Shrewsbury and Bromley played a stalemate, in their first ever league meeting. Shrewsbury had the better of the game, but Bromley played their part in this one. John Marquis, George Nurse and Anthony Scully had the best chances for the Shrews, while Corey Whiteley had his shot saved by Toby Savin. Bromley take a good point, but Shrewsbury miss the chance to just nicely settle back in the bottom tier.

Walsall 2-1 Swindon Town: A game of what might have been for Swindon, came straight after a season of what might have been for Walsall, after they stole a 2-1 win despite being down to ten men. Evan Weir scored my goal of the weekend after 7 minutes, his thunderous free-kick finding the top corner in this one. The keeper stood no chance. Swindon controlled the game, and it became pure dominance when Brandon Comley was sent off after 21 minutes. Drinan missed Swindon’s best chance of the first half, but they were awarded a penalty after 79 minutes, Harry Smith being pulled down. Will Wright squeezed into the bottom corner, and surely there was only going to be one winner right? Well, last year, Walsall may have crumbled, but they picked their moment in this one. Connor Barrett took a square ball, chested it down, and calmly rolled into the corner to give the Saddlers an unexpected win.

Newport County 1-1 Notts County: Newport County and Notts County played out a 1-1 draw on a day where an incident in the stand meant the game had to start at 4pm. After a goalless first half, Newport scored after 49 minutes, when Ged Garner headed them in front on his debut for the club. The lead lasted 15 minutes, Jodi Jones converting from the spot, after Matthew Dennis had been brought down. The hosts nearly went back in front through Michael Reindorf, his effort hitting the post after a lot of confusion in the box, but an opening day draw is never a bad thing.

EFL Uncovered Sky Bet League One Round Up:

Luton Town 1-0 AFC Wimbledon: A mediocre game but a really good start to the season for Luton, who are trying to eradicate their nightmares of the last two seasons, by beating last season’s League Two play-off winners 1-0. Luton had the chances, but I use the term chances loosely. AFC Wimbledon looked like they were just playing for the draw, but Luton’s luck was in five minutes from the end, Ryan Johnson’s attempted clearance looped over his goalkeeper and into the net off the bar. It’s Luton’s first win in their first game for three seasons.

Cardiff City 2-1 Peterborough United: Cardiff’s first game at League One level for 22 years started slowly, but a second half comeback meant the Bluebirds took the three points. Cardiff had chances early on, but it’s Posh who took the lead in the first half, Bradley Ihionvien slotting away a penalty. Rubin Colwill then provided a goal of the weekend contender (there were a few this week) as his amazing free-kick after half time brought Cardiff level within two minutes of the second half beginning. An equally good goal brought home the win for Cardiff, as 18-year-old Ronan Kpakio curled in a first time effort off the bar to score his first goal in senior football, and get Cardiff their first win of the season.

Blackpool 2-3 Stevenage: A sloppy defensive display by Blackpool allowed Stevenage to pick up their first ever win at Bloomfield Road. Blackpool thought they would continue their solid home run against Stevenage, new signing George Honeyman pouncing on a mistake by Jordan Houghton after only 6 minutes. But Fraser Horsfall’s weak back pass was just as easily pounced on by Jamie Reid, who made it 1-1 after 17 minutes. A controversial penalty was awarded to Stevenage for a handball by Michael Ihiekwe, which Jamie Reid put away to give Stevenage the half time lead. Peacock-Farrell then provided a poor clearance to allow Jordan Roberts to cross for Dan Kemp to fire home after 50 minutes, last season’s top scorer off the mark. Niall Ennis reduced the arrears with 10 minutes to go, but Stevenage held on for an historic victory.

Bradford City 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers: Two goals in the opening 12 minutes led the way for Bradford to pick up an opening day win in their first game in League One for six years. Antoni Sarcevic, last year’s final day hero, picked up where he left off by firing home a rebound after Mikki van Sas had just made a double save from Stephen Humphrys. Bobby Pointon doubled the advantage after just 12 minutes, a beautiful drive into the corner from 20 yards. Wycombe missed a big chance after half time, Westergaard shooting over from six yards. Wycombe did get a goal back through Dan Udoh, but Sam Walker denied Bradley Fink late on, and the Bantams picked up a first win.

Burton Albion 2-1 Mansfield Town: Burton, who struggled for a lot of last season before their great escape, opened up this season with a 2-1 win over Mansfield. Burton took the lead midway through the first half, Charlie Webster firing home from 25 yards out, with good work from Kyran Lofthouse on the right. Webster doubled his and the Brewers advantage in the second half, a one-two with Fabio Tavares allowing him to slot home and give Burton breathing space. Mansfield had their chances throughout the game, and it could have been a different story. Bailey Cargill nodded home from a teasing cross by Stephen McLaughlin, but despite their best efforts, the Stags couldn’t get level, and Burton held on.

Doncaster Rovers 1-0 Exeter City: Doncaster left it late to win their first game back in League One, but they dominated the game against Exeter City, and could and should have scored more. Exeter had good chances before half-time, Sonny Cox firing wide, and Matty Pearson’s defensive header hitting the bar. Robbie Gotts nearly gave Donny the lead in the second half, but he pulled it wide. Ilmari Niskanen had the ball smothered at his feet by Thimothee Lo-Tutala, and the ball went down the other end, where the hosts got a penalty with two minutes to go. Luke Molyneux slotted it down the middle to give Doncaster an opening day win.

Huddersfield Town 3-0 Leyton Orient: If Lee Grant’s managerial career goes as well as his first game went, he’ll be a modern managerial great, as Huddersfield won 3-0 at home against last season’s play-off finalists, Leyton Orient. Both sides struck the post early on, but new signing Joe Low was left all alone at a free-kick, and he headed home from Herbie Kane’s ball. Alfie May nearly doubled the advantage in the first half, but Orient had the better chances before half time. Alfie May did get his goal in the second half, sending Tommy Simkin the wrong way from the spot. Ruben Roosken fired home from a narrow angle from Joe Taylor’s pass, and it made the scoreline more one-sided than the game actually was.

Lincoln City 2-0 Reading: Lincoln started their season in a positive way, beating Reading 2-0. Lincoln looked dangerous from the off, and they confirmed that with a 21st minute lead, Rob Street latching on to a clearance by George Wickens, and he squeezed past Joel Pereira with the help of a deflection. Street nearly doubled the advantage, but was stopped by Michael Stickland. Reading had a goal ruled out for offside through Camara, but Lincoln held on before half time. Both teams had chances in the second half, Pereira saving brilliantly from Jack Moylan, and Lewis Wing’s 20 yard effort for Reading was pushed onto the post by Wickens. Lincoln finished off the game, when Reeco Hackett finished calmly from McGrandles’ through ball.

Plymouth Argyle 1-3 Barnsley: Tom Cleverley’s first game as Plymouth manager ended in a controversial defeat to Barnsley. Caleb Watts had a goal ruled out in the fifth minute, a controversial handball in the build-up keeping it at 0-0. It got worse for Plymouth as Brendan Wiredu deflected Davis Keillor-Dunn’s free-kick into his own net. Wiredu’s debut got even worse, as his poor clearance was just as poorly cleared by Victor Palsson, and Adam Phillips volleyed home to make it 2-0 to Barnsley. Watts must have felt his goal wasn’t coming, when his header was tipped over by Murphy Cooper, before a second controversial incident between Cooper and Watts, the latter being denied a penalty, before a brawl ended the second half between both sets of players. Plymouth got a goal back shortly after, as Watts chested down Palsson’s header and volleyed home from close range, possibly in anger, and he made it 2-1. Jack Shepherd was sent off on the hour mark, picking up a second yellow after being involved in that brawl in the first half, he picked up a second for a handball. Plymouth became lacklustre in their search for an equaliser, and the ten men secured the win, Keillor-Dunn capitalising on a mistake at the back, and he calmly slotted home. A lot to unpick from that one, and Barnsley take a win against the run of play.

Rotherham United 2-1 Port Vale: Rotherham picked up an opening day win over newly-promoted Port Vale, as they try to get over the disappointment of last season and never really challenging. Sam Nombe put the Millers in control after 13 minutes when he met Joe Rafferty’s brilliant cross to sweep home from 12 yards. It got even better before the half hour, Nombe getting his second after tidying up when Marko Marosi could only flap at Denzel Hall’s header. Vale then had Jaheim Headley sent off for a reckless challenge on Nombe. Vale got one back in the second half, with Connor Hall converting Mitch Clark’s cross. Rotherham also went down to ten men in this game, Zak Jules getting his marching orders, picking up a second yellow card. Vale hit the post in injury time through Lorent Tolaj, but Rotherham held on.

Wigan Athletic 3-1 Northampton Town: Wigan Athletic dominated Northampton in their opening game of the season, which saw the home side 3 up inside the first 46 minutes. The home side’s early dominance was rewarded when Joseph Hungbo’s shot was volleyed home by debutant Fraser Murray. Northampton almost levelled when Cameron McGeehan headed against the outside of the post, but two minutes later, Wigan were two up, Hungbo the provider again, this time his corner nodded home by Jensen Weir. Lee Burge was in good form in the first half, keeping the score down, but Wigan made it 3-0 fifteen seconds into the second half, Murray getting his second goal. Northampton’s consolation came when Michael Forbes headed home from close range. Sam Tickle had to make a late save from Elliott List to keep it comfortable for the Latics. Wigan could and should have had more goals in this one, but the Latics are off to a strong start.

Stockport County 2-0 Bolton Wanderers: New signing Malik Mothersille shone as Stockport vowed to go one step further than their third place from last season, beating local rivals Bolton 2-0. Bolton hit the post twice in this game, and it really could have been a different story, with Xavier Simons and Max Conway hitting the woodwork in this game. The opening goal came on the stroke of half-time, Ollie Norwood’s shot being deflected home by Mothersille to get his first goal for the home side. The three points were wrapped up late in this game, Danny Andrew, who has signed on a one month deal, whipped his free kick in to Kyle Wooton, and his header sealed the win.

League Two Table:
The top 7 all won on the opening day, with Grimsby Town leading the way on goal difference. Crewe, Fleetwood, Walsall, Harrogate, Cambridge and Chesterfield also picked up opening day victories. At the bottom, Barnet and Crawley complete the relegation zone, but there's a long way to go for fans of those two clubs just yet.

League One table:
Huddersfield Town have the early lead at the top of the League One table, but the top 11 all have 3 points, no draws on the opening day. With 45 matches to go, Northampton, Plymouth, Reading and Leyton Orient are in dire trouble and will hope to avoid a relegation scrap.

Championship Transfer News (1st August 2025)

CHARLTON ATHLETIC have confirmed the signing of midfielder Harvey Knibbs from Reading for an undisclosed fee. The 26-year-old has signed a four-year deal with The Addicks following an outstanding two-year stint with the Royals, where he scored 32 goals and made 12 assists. He becomes the club’s ninth signing of a busy Summer, where they have also signed Sonny Carey, Thomas Kaminski, Tanto Olaofe, Amari’i Bell, Reece Burke, Joe Rankin-Costello, Rob Apter and Charlie Kelman.

DERBY COUNTY have added another attacking option ahead of the brand new season, with the signing of Rhian Brewster on a two-year deal until the Summer of 2027. The frontman was a regular for Sheffield United last season, playing 42 times in all competitions as they finished third in the table and reached the Play-Off Final, which they lost to eventual winners Sunderland. 25-year-old Brewster is Derby’s 8th signing of the Summer, and their third attacking addition following the arrivals of Carlton Morris and Patrick Agyemang.

HULL CITY have announced the signing of Turkish forward Enis Destan on a three-year contract, arriving on a free transfer after leaving Turkish club Trabzonspor where he scored 14 goals and made 7 assists in 65 appearances. The frontman netted 9 goals in the 2023-24 season, including a final day hat-trick against Ankaragucu, as Trabzonspor ended third in the league, and he netted a further three goals on their way to the Turkish Cup Final. Last season, the club made the Turkish Cup Final again, and he also featured in the Europa League.

Sol Sidibe has departed STOKE CITY and gone to join PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The 18-year-old midfielder penned a three-year contract with the Potters during the Summer of 2024 and has made 21 first-team appearances for the club, despite missing the second half of the season through injury.

WREXHAM have made their latest marquee signing, bringing in experienced Premier League defender Conor Coady from Leicester City. Coady, 32, arrives at the Stok Cae Ras on a two-year deal with the option of an additional third year. He’s played ten times for England, and joins the Red Dragons after playing 43 times for Leicester in all competitions. The Liverpool-born defender has made 485 appearances in his career, including 198 in the Premier League.

League One Review: 1st August 2025

Luton Town 1-0 AFC Wimbledon (Johnson 85' og) Luton Town won a drab opening day game against AFC Wimbledon 1-0. In a match that never really got going, and with no threat at all from the visitors, it felt like it was still a pre-season game. A Nahki Wells cross was unfortunately deflected home by Ryan Johnson with 5 minutes to go, and for the Hatters, it's three points, but they've left a lot to be desired if they're to make it look like they're going to challenge for automatic promotion.

As we are all aware, the excitement is bubbling up ahead of the new English Football League season beginning tonight, as Luton Town take on AFC Wimbledon in a League One match that has us whetting our appetite for more this weekend. But did you know, that a number of years ago, this was the Blue Square Premier Playoff Final?

That's right. In 2011, this was played out at the top tier of non-league football to decide who would be playing amongst the 92. For Luton, this was just two years after their relegation to non-league. For AFC Wimbledon, this would be something that only dreams were made of. The team that had their club robbed from them, made to move to Milton Keynes, and they were just one game away from the EFL.

AFC Wimbledon were founded in 2002, after a group of angry Wimbledon supporters decided to begin a fan-owned football club due to Wimbledon's imminent departure to Milton Keynes to set up MK Dons. AFC Wimbledon were founded in May of 2002, had been affiliated to two different county FA's, and were placed in the Combined Counties League Premier Division under the management of former Wimbledon player Terry Eames, who was appointed in June 2002. Their first game was a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Sutton United, but it was played in front of a crowd of more than 4,000 people.

Success would follow after a third placed finish in their first season, narrowly missing out on promotion. They got promoted to the Isthmian League in just their second season, before two promotions by 2008 saw them join the Conference South, this being just 6 years after being founded. In this time, The Wombles set a record, remaining unbeaten across 78 league matches, a run that began in February 2003 and finished in November 2004.

In the 2008-09 season, they won the Conference South at the first time of asking, before reaching the Conference National for the first time in their history. This was still only 7 years after they had been reformed. In the 2009-10 season, the club finished 8th, 14 points away from the play-offs, but a strong season nonetheless in what by this time had become an incredibly tough league. In recent years, Luton, Wrexham, Mansfield, Oxford and Cambridge had dropped out of the Football League, and every year were among the favourites to go up. Surely AFC Wimbledon were going to have to wait their turn?

The following season, Crawley Town were promoted to League Two for the first time in their history, but AFC Wimbledon had been their closest challengers, ending in second place, their highest position so far. They would take part in the playoffs, starting with a two-legged match against Fleetwood Town. This would become the biggest margin of victory in the playoffs at this level, with AFC Wimbledon smashing the Cod Army 8-1 over two legs. This meant they set up a final against Luton Town at the Etihad Stadium, winner taking all in this one. Neither team deserved to lose. Both sides had been resolute defensively all season, both having a top goalkeeper for that league, but this game ended 0-0. AFC Wimbledon won 4-3 on penalties to break Luton hearts and send the Dons up, just 9 years following their formation.

Since they joined the league 14 years ago, they've been promoted twice to League One since, and this is their second stint at this level, having been there for a few seasons at the start of this decade. Could they cause a similar shock to what they did when they beat Luton Town at the Etihad all those years ago? Find out tonight, at 8pm.
