ONE UNDER THE BELT v GALLANT PIRATES
The SSA and willing travellers, found an uncharacteristically wet Penzance, but full of warm hospitality.
Cornish Pirates and their supporters are a credit to the game of rugby.
In a friendly match at Mennaye Field, the home side hoped to repeat the win over Saracens when they last met.
If they couldn’t quite do it, it wasn’t for the want of trying.
Saracens went in at halftime with the score 7-22 in their favour, and despite the introduction of seasoned international players, they were held to Cornish Pirates 14-29 Saracens, in the end.
The increasingly wet ball and pitch did put paid to some of the visitors more adventurous moves, as the match went on.
Rotimi Segun shot away on the left wing to open the scoring for Sarries, but Max Malins couldn’t convert. 3 of his kicks missed on the evening, 2 striking the post.
A Saracens Academy graduate, Fraser Rawlins who has suffered long term injury setbacks, reintroduced himself with 2 excellent tries, playing with pace and determination.
He was a handful for Pirates whenever he was on the field.
His first set Pirates back to 0-10 but they pounced on an opportunity, winger Arthur Relton scoring with fly half Arwel Robson converting.
The pace of Jack Bracken soon opened the gap again and he was in fine form at both ends of the pitch, then that inveterate try scorer, James Hadfield, went over at the back of a maul, an area that on the whole, the home side had the better of as they proved later.
Barring replacements already made and Jack Bracken, the Saracens team that contested the second half was completely different.
Owen Farrell was classy and Elliot Daly thumped massive clearance kicks, but this more starry lineup was met with fortitude by Cornish Pirates.
They opened the second half scoring with continued maul pressure that saw ho**er, Matt Pritchard, cross the line, with Arwel Robson slotting the extras.
14-22 and a glimmer of hope, but Fraser Rawlins wasn’t having it, running and diving in the right corner for an excellent finish, Owen Farrell making the difficult conversion look easy.
Because the starting front row was replaced by 25 minutes, this allowed a good workout for South African new signing, Corn Weilback.
He came through well.
Inevitable rust was knocked off, the season has started and an away win gained against good opposition, whose forwards gave Saracens food for thought.
An enjoyable evening and a very useful opener.
Well done to all concerned.

SPECIAL SYDNEY
The SSA and the support as a whole, will be delighted that the talented and popular Sydney Gregson, has signed a new contract with Saracens Women.
The 30 year old highly talented back, and valued school teacher, her pupils love supporting her at matches, had 3 seasons with the then Bristol Ladies, joining Sarries in 2018.
A versatile back and a dangerous runner with an eye for the try line, she has represented England at age group and senior level, in both 7s and 15s.
Like many kindly natured players off the field, Syd isn’t afraid to get stuck in on it, and she does, whether at centre or wing.
A serious knee injury suffered in training, including damage to her anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament, caused a whole season to be lost, but she bounced back to win PWR and Women’s 6 Nations Grand Slam, winners medals.
She is highly photogenic and can spot a camera a mile away and is not afraid to be photographed battered and bloody, as long as her hair is okay.
Yes. Sydney Gregson is a character, and we love her.
Supporters' Player of the Season at the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign confirms our respect for her playing ability.
Thank you Syd.

WELCOME BETH
The SSA is delighted to hear that the talented 25 year old back, Bethany Wilcock, has joined Saracens Women from Harlequins women.
A powerful runner in the back 3, often at fullback, she represented the England Sevens squad in the 2019/20 season, first appearing at the World Series in Biarritz.
She moved to 15s for England U20s in 2018 and joined the senior team as a development player for the 2021 Women's Six Nations Championship.
Her successful Harlequins career began in 2019, and they will be sad to lose her, as she has become a fan favourite over 7 years with the club, where she was a young player of the year in her first season, and scored a try on her debut.
A Premier15s title winner, and 69 appearances with Harlequins is testament to her quality, and we look forward to meeting her.
Welcome to the Sarries family, Beth Wilcock.
