Opening date for Harrow’s refurbished tennis courts revealed
Harrow residents can look forward to an exciting summer of tennis as 28 refurbished tennis courts are set to reopen on Monday, June 19, 2023.
The extensive renovation project, made possible by a generous £587,000 grant from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and the Government, has transformed the courts, offering improved facilities for players of all levels.
The four-month refurbishment program was initiated following a comprehensive consultation last year. Thanks to the successful collaboration between the local authorities and the LTA, Harrow’s tennis courts have been restored to their former glory, erasing the effects of years of neglect.
Councillor Jean Lammiman, Portfolio Holder for Community & Culture at Harrow Council, expressed her delight at the completion of the project, stating, “We’re restoring pride back into our tennis courts, which had suffered enormously due to a decade of neglect. I am delighted that our newly refurbished courts are not only open, but open in time for the peak season with Wimbledon just around the corner.
Beginning June 19, tennis enthusiasts will have access to 28 courts spread across 10 parks in Harrow. These include Byron Recreation (3 courts), Centenary Park (2 courts), Harrow Weald Recreation (4 courts), Headstone Manor Park (6 courts), Montesole Playing Fields (2 courts), Pinner Village Gardens (2 courts), Queensbury Park (2 courts), Rayners Mead (2 courts), Roxeth Recreation (2 courts), and West Harrow (3 courts).
While some courts are still undergoing final touches, including Chandos Recreation Ground, Kenton Recreation Ground, and Harrow Recreation Ground, the majority of the facilities will be fully operational. The remaining courts are expected to be completed in the coming weeks, ensuring all players have ample opportunities to enjoy the revitalised tennis experience.
To facilitate bookings, a new online system has been implemented. Starting Monday, June 12, residents can visit www.lta.org.uk/book to reserve their preferred court up to seven days in advance. The cost for court bookings will be £5 per hour, with concessions available at £4 per hour. QR codes displaying booking information will be placed in each park, while a helpline number will also be provided for those who prefer to make reservations over the phone.
In addition to providing a platform for tennis enthusiasts, Harrow’s refurbished courts aim to promote inclusivity and offer opportunities for newcomers to the sport. Free weekly coach-led sessions will be available at all 13 parks, accompanied by complimentary rental of tennis equipment. Furthermore, targeted group coaching sessions will be offered, allowing individuals to enhance their skills in a supportive environment. Interested participants are encouraged to book in advance to secure their spot.

Just a reminder... The volunteers of Friends of Rayners Mead only deal with park issues that relate to maintaining, planting and cleaning.
Unfortunately we don’t have any guidelines nor authority to deal with concerns or grievances between park users. We say to people that matters of crime are reported to police; matters relating to the park are the responsibility of the council’ park department.

I would like to thank all the volunteers who have devoted their time and hard work maintaining our wonderful little park. All the hard work is certainly showing now as we have entered Spring.
It is however, been overshadowed by a certain person or persons who think its okay to dig up the volunteers hard work and remove shrubs (4 in total so far) from the park. Yet again, one person(s) thoughtless act spoiling it for others to enjoy.... Thank you!!!
