When the boxer Muhammad Ali was asked, "What is the central part of your training? Is it jogging? Is it sparring?" His answer was: "The central part of my training isn't running or vitamins or punching the bags; the central part of my training is avoiding the nightclubs, the parties, and the girls. You want to know the truth? The central part of my training is being in bed by 9pm."
I, Timber Hawkeye, am obviously not a boxer, but when it comes to training the mind, my spiritual practice is more deeply supported by what I choose NOT to do than by what I do. That's because when we say "No" to one thing, we are actually saying "Yes" to something else. Each decision is a navigation choice, either out of alignment with the life we want, or towards it. Enlightenment and Alignment go hand-in-hand.
So, rather than thinking what it is you need to do more frequently or more intensely, I say contemplate what you can stop doing altogether (if only as an experiment for a few days), just to figure out if it's a healthy habit that you can easily stop and go without, or if stopping gives you anxiety and intense craving, which would mean it's probably a sign of dependence rather than support.
Remember: Our spiritual practice is more deeply supported by what we choose NOT to do than by what we do.
