In March, our colleagues Jacqueline Gibson and Lynn Hanna Short attended the launch of the R๐˜ฆ๐˜จ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜Œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ, ๐˜Š๐˜ช๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜œ๐˜ด๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜Œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ-๐˜ฐ๐˜ง-๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ฆ (๐˜™๐˜Œ๐˜š๐˜Š๐˜œ๐˜Œ) ๐˜—๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜บ ๐˜‰๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ง at the Northern Ireland Assembly.

The event brought together leaders from academia, industry, and policy to address a growing challenge: how to manage end-of-life renewable energy infrastructure โ€” particularly as wind farms approach decommissioning.

A key focus of the RESCUE project, funded by UK Research and Innovation, is enabling circular supply chains for wind energy. This includes ensuring that components such as turbine blades, magnets, and nacelles are reused, repurposed, or recycled โ€” rather than sent to landfill.

The discussions highlighted both the urgency and the opportunity:

* The environmental cost of material extraction remains significant, particularly for rare earth elements

* Greater consistency in waste classification is needed to support circularity at scale

* Embedding reuse within planning processes is critical to long-term system change

* Reducing reliance on virgin materials and imported resources is essential for a sustainable energy future

It was encouraging to hear from organisations leading the way in this space, including Ionic Technologies and Plaswire Limited, who are demonstrating what is possible through innovation and collaboration.

At International Synergies, we recognise that the clean energy transition must also be a circular one. Addressing resource use and end-of-life management is essential to ensuring that decarbonisation efforts deliver true, long-term sustainability.

Exploring new opportunities for resource sharing and collaboration through a recent site visit.

Our Sustainable Business Practitioner Mark Elliott recently visited Richard Bradley of Belfast City Centre Cycles and Retro Recording Studio to identify potential resource matches and circular opportunities across both operations.

The visit highlighted several immediate opportunities for collaboration:

* Redistributing surplus materials from the bike repair shop, including used inner tubes

* Connecting with other local bike shops to aggregate quantities of these materials for reuse

* Supporting the recording studio in sourcing items such as sofas, mixing desks, and electronic equipment

This is a strong example of how local networks can unlock value โ€” not just within a single business, but across neighbouring activities.

By identifying both resource needs and underutilised materials, we can support practical, low-cost solutions that reduce waste and keep materials in circulation for longer.

At International Synergies, these site visits are a key part of how we uncover opportunities for industrial symbiosis โ€” turning everyday challenges into collaborative solutions.

If your organisation has surplus materials or resource needs, weโ€™d be keen to explore how we can support similar connections.

Last month, our Director had the opportunity to speak at the โ€œ๐˜–๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ค๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜‰๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด ๐˜ต๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Š๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜Œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜จ๐˜บ ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜•๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฏ ๐˜๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅโ€ panel event, hosted by Queen's University Belfast.

Bringing together leaders from across policy, industry, and academia, the discussion explored the key challenges facing Northern Irelandโ€™s transition to clean energy โ€” from policy and planning constraints to the need for greater participation and collaboration. A clear theme emerged: while ambition is high, delivery must accelerate.

Current systems and linear economic models are not designed to meet the scale or pace required for net zero targets. Without addressing resource use, material flows, and supply chain impacts, there is a real risk of shifting emissions rather than reducing them.

The conversation reinforced the importance of moving beyond theory and scaling solutions that already work in practice:

* Resource efficiency

* Industrial symbiosis

* Cross-sector collaboration

At International Synergies, this is not a future ambition โ€” it is the reality of how we support businesses today. By connecting industries, keeping materials in use for longer, and designing out waste, we enable faster, more cost-effective decarbonisation.

Thank you to the organisers and fellow panellists for an insightful discussion, including Dipali Mathur and John Barry B9 Energy Ionic Technologies Amanda S.

The transition to clean energy is not just a technical challenge โ€” it is a systems challenge. The question remains: are we ready to rethink the system?

A great example of resource matching in action โ€” and the power of simply making the right connection.

Recently, our Sustainable Business Practitioner Liam McNally helped facilitate a resource match between ๐—Ÿ๐—ถ๐˜๐˜๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—•๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ธ๐˜€๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ and North West Regional College (NWRC).

What started as a conversation back in 2022 turned into a practical, real-world outcome: surplus library shelving were successfully redistributed for reuse โ€” giving these materials a second life within the local community.

This is exactly what resource matching is about:

* Keeping valuable resources in use for longer

* Reducing waste and disposal costs

* Supporting local organisations through collaboration

* Delivering low-cost, low-carbon solutions

Thanks to collaboration across organisations, what was once surplus is now supporting a growing independent bookstore โ€” demonstrating how circular approaches can create both environmental and social value.

At International Synergies, we see these opportunities every day. By connecting businesses and organisations, we unlock hidden value in underused resources and turn potential waste into practical solutions.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making this happen โ€” a brilliant example of what can be achieved through collaboration.
