The skipper Al talks us through dropping the divers onto HMS Warrior II — a 54-metre dive on a wreck with quite a story behind it.

Originally a luxury 1,000-ton yacht, Warrior II was requisitioned during the war and survived WWI, only to be bombed and sunk by German aircraft on 11 July 1940, around 13 miles south-east of Portland Bill.

And the sinking itself was quite an extraordinary affair. While the lifeboat was searching for survivors, spent bullets and shrapnel were raining down around them. Then, incredibly, a German aircraft came down just yards from the boat — and they managed to rescue one of its crew.

Some wrecks have a story.

⛵️Sunk in 1877 The Avalanche was on passage from London to New Zealand when it collided with another ship, The Forest, (1,244 ton sailing vessel). The Avalanche suffered a large gash in the hull, which caused the ship to sink within ten minutes of the accident, leaving little time for the passengers to evacuate the stricken vessel. On board were a total of 93 crew and pas-sengers; only three survived the catastrophe. The wreck of the Avalanche was discovered in 1984 and a large number of objects have been recov. ered. Part of the salvage collection can be seen at the Maritime section of Weymouth museum at Brewers’ Quay. The vessel lies upside down

🌊 LEOPOLDVILLE ! NOT THIS TIME…

This weekend we were meant to be heading across the Channel to Cherbourg to dive the iconic wreck of the SS Leopoldville for 4 days.

Sadly, the strong winds and high seas made the crossing unsafe and the conditions simply weren’t going to give us any sort of worthwhile diving.

As hard as it is to cancel a trip — especially when our of divers have been waiting for this one — safety has to come first. 💙

The Leopoldville isn’t going anywhere… so we’ll be back. 🤞⚓️💪
