Bernard Darwin said "At the fourth, we may think ourselves brave and splendid by cutting a corner to the left only to find that we have made the second shot exceedingly difficult thereby."

And he's right. While a bold tee shot over the corner is tempting, the sensible play is out to the right, leaving a better view of the green and less chance of finding the heather.

A flight up our opener - a gentle handshake to the round, but the lone par 5 on the course, so one you must take advantage of.

Two-ball golf means our 12th hole is often reached in under 2 hours and played in under 5 minutes in a match.

One ball on the green, the other in the heather, and balls are in pockets before you know it. On to 13.

The summer has been hard on our heather, but recent rain is bringing it back to life.

We're so committed to this vital part of the landscape that we employ a full-time Heathsman to tend it year-round.

Our Winter Foursomes Challenge Trophy is now open for entries!

This knockout tournament - played over our heathland from November to January - is open to both men and women and allows members, guests, and visitors to enjoy West Sussex as intended: foursomes matchplay.

We still can't get over how stunning our course looked this summer, and just how much the strategic design shone as a result.

Firm fairways and greens meant angles truly mattered, and the cunning golfer no doubt reigned supreme over the long golfer in most matches.

Our 4th hole - a beautiful dogleg that would be a standout at most other courses. But here, it's just another gorgeous par 4.

Today, we celebrate and thank our whole greenkeeping team at West Sussex.

Their immense effort, dedication and attention to detail ensure we continue to maintain superb standards across our heathland, even in some of the most testing conditions.

So much of their work happens quietly and behind the scenes, but it is fundamental to the experience we enjoy on the course every day.

Thank you to the whole team for your relentless hard work and commitment. It is hugely appreciated.

Walk the course on any given day and you'll spot foursomes where the dogs outnumber the golfers, so it's only right we celebrate .

Our four-legged friends are a huge part of life at the club, which feels all the more homely for their presence.

Little has changed on our 14th hole in the last 90+ years.

Bar the obvious tree growth around it, the very questions the architects asked back then remain the same today.
