Geoff O'Brien Health and Fitness

Geoff O'Brien Health and Fitness closed in February 2020 Geoff O'Brien is a Personal Trainer based in Reading. He is a specialist in Weight Loss, Body Image and Fitness for Life.

He is one of the Personal Trainers based at Rivermead Leisure Complex in Reading and Ruth Mills Therapy Centre in Brimpton. He can also train you at your home, local park or in an independent gym local to you. Geoff also runs 5 Bootcamps a week in Burghfield Common, Brimpton and Ashford Hill.

Over and out.

After 10 years of Bootcamps, I did my last one this morning! I had 3 original bootcampers from the 3 different bootcamp locations. What an amazing group who have totally spoiled me today. Thank you so much ladies! X

Tomorrow I will start my final week as a Personal Trainer 😭

It is going to be an emotional week, but I'm proud of everything my clients have achieved. Something one of my clients said to me last week, has stuck in my head all week.

"You feel sad because you feel guilty. You feel guilty because you genuinely care about your clients and that is why you are so good at what you do and why you'll be missed by all your clients." ❤️😭

*Big News Alert*

It is with a very heavy heart that I am announcing that at the end of the month I will be closing Geoff O'Brien Health and Fitness after over a decade! 😭

I have been offered a career change which is too good to turn down. I have been offered the chance of being a Clinical Software Trainer within the NHS for EMIS Health. This means traveling around to Hospitals, Care Homes and Doctors Surgeries and training them on how to use the computer systems. It will combines two things I am passionate about, Health and Technology.

This has been the most difficult decision I have ever had to make and the idea of stopping my business has been horrendous for me. But I believe that it is the best thing for me and my family long term. I will have more security, actual holiday pay and a much better work/life balance.

I have absolutely loved working with so many great people over the last decade. I could (and probably should) write a book filled with all the hilarious stories and all the huge successes. From amazing transformations, epic sporting achievements, beautiful brides and even helping a couple fulfill their dream of becoming a family. ❤️

I'm so grateful to have shared the last decade with so many amazing people. I have grown so much as a person because of all of you. Truly, THANK YOU!

At the weekend someone said to me "Don't you have a real job too? Personal trainers are glorified gym buddies and a waste of money." 🤔

He may not have appreciated what I do, but this person does!

Geoff is more than just your typical personal trainer. He's a confidant, counsellor, life coach and most importantly a friend.
I started seeing Geoff around May 2013 with one very specific goal. I needed to lose weight and lower my BMI in order to qualify for IVF treatment. And I needed to do it before my 30th birthday in Oct 2015. My husband and I had been trying for a baby for over 4 years by the time I met Geoff.
Over the next two years we worked closely together, where Geoff worked me hard during workouts, monitored my diet, and offering constant support and reassurance along the way. He made me feel completely comfortable during weigh ins and measurements and really boosted my confidence when I lost weight or cms, but equally reassured me that we would reach target when I hadn't lost weight or had put some weight back on.
Our workout sessions weren't all about weight, measurements and food diaries. Geoff was a wonderful shoulder to cry and lean on when I needed it the most. During our sessions Geoff would not only give me a hard workout but he looked out for me, helped me keep the light alive when I thought I'd never achieve our dream of having a baby. We talked and laughed about so many different things and I found myself confiding in Geoff, not only about my struggles of trying for a baby, but issues at work, arguments I'd had with my hubby, dramas with my girlfriends, career advice and even the occasional fashion advice!
Slowly and surely I started to drop the weight and by June 2015, I qualified for IVF on the NHS. While our first cycle in Oct 2015 failed, we were lucky enough to get a 6 frozen embryos from that cycle. I continued to see Geoff following this treatment, by now, more as a close friend than as my personal trainer. After taking a break from trying to conceive due to a family illness, my husband and I decided to try IVF again in July 2017, using the frozen embryos from our first cycle. My beautiful baby daughter was born 2018.
I will always be eternally grateful to Geoff for helping us achieve our dreams of becoming a family, and equally for being a dear friend.

*Today's Answer*

Lactofree Milk isn't actually free of Lactose. The enzyme Lactase is added to the milk to allow people who are lactose intolerant to digest it correctly. Therefore, just like Milk, Lactofree Milk will have an effect on a Diabetics Blood Glucose levels.

*Morning Brain Teaser* Answer then Share please!

Lactofree Milk doesn't contain Lactose (Sugar) and is therefore a better choice for Diabetics.

*Answer to today's Brain Teaser*

Both True and False depending on what type of stretching you do.

Static Stretching (pulling) shouldn't be done as part of a warm up and has been shown to increase, not decrease, risk of injury.

Dynamic Stretching (using movement) is a great way to warm muscles up prior to exercise and has been shown to reduce the risk of injury.

Only you know which type of stretching you meant, so only you know if you were correct 😉

*Morning Brain Teaser* - Answer then Share please!

You should always stretch as part of a warm up. It will help reduce the risk of injury.

The Answer to today's brain teaser.....BREAD!

The highly refined starch in Bread is made of Glucose. It therefore goes straight into the blood stream and very quickly increases blood glucose levels.

Sugar (Sucrose) is made up of Glucose and Fructose. The Fructose goes to the liver to be converted into Glucose. This takes time. Therefore Sugar increases blood glucose levels slower than Bread.

*Morning Brain Teaser* Answer then Share please.

A piece of White Bread contains the exact same amount of Carbohydrates as 3 Tea Spoons of Sugar (15 grams), but if eaten at the same time, which one pushes up Blood Glucose levels quicker? 27/11/2019

Is there a difference between Green and Yellow Bananas?

Yes. Green Bananas have resistant starch which can't be digested by our small intestine so goes to the large intestine. In the large intestine it feeds the good bacteria. That is very good for us. As bananas age, the starch changes so yellow bananas don't have resistant statch.

Toast has a slightly lower Glycemic Index (GI) than bread. Freezing bread before toasting has a 30% lower GI than bread. However total Carbohydrates is more important than GI.

Machines or Free Weights?

Machines serve a purpose if you lack strength and confidence. But they only allow movements on a fixed path. Free Weights will also workout your stabiliser muscles making it a better, more complete workout.

What is anterior pelvic tilt?

Anterior pelvic tilt is when your pelvis becomes tilted forward due to muscular imbalance and tightness. It doesn't always cause problems but can cause back and knee problems. I would recommend stretching your hip flexors and strengthening your core and glutes.

If you need help with muscular imbalance, I would recommend Simon at Connective Sports Massage.

Do I need to pay attention to the traffic light system on food labels?

No! They are based of a High Carb/Low Fat Diet which is not the way to go.

How can I increase my strength without getting bulky?

Getting bulky is actually very difficult. It requires a very specific training regime and very specific nutrition. Therefore getting bulky isn't something most people need to worry about. Increasing muscle mass while decreasing fat usually leads to a size reduction overall.

Absolutely!! Resistance training has many benefits which are important at all ages. Increased metabolism and muscular strength (to support arthritic joints) are just two of the big ones that help people as they age.

Should you exercise when you are poorly?

Listen to your body. If your body is fighting an illness/infection, you will not have the energy to exercise. Not only will it be a difficult and not a beneficial workout, you could prolong your recovery.

If you are done fighting and only have some symptoms left for example the end of a cold, you can exercise. But once again, listen to your body!
