Evidence to prove what we pregnancy teachers already know!

A reminder that researchers looking at the effectiveness of prenatal yoga on delivery outcomes undertook a meta-analysis with interesting results.

They, "identified that yoga improved vaginal delivery, decreased premature delivery and birth weight of newborns, shorten the labor duration." (Rong et al 2020).

A note about the birth weight finding before anyone asks. This doesn't mean that the babies were compromised or didn't grow well. The average weight of the babies in the yoga and non-yoga groups was within normal limits and the researchers seem to be suggesting that this might mean that women who did yoga in these studies had babies who were less likely to be affected by gestational diabetes, but this needs more research.

The authors concluded that, "Prenatal yoga is an effective complementary medicine to improve delivery outcomes and not to increase the risk of fetus, which is worth recommending to pregnant women."

Not all of the studies involved in this meta-analysis were of high quality, but it's great that this gives us some evidence and a better idea of what we need to look at in future research.

You can see the original research at https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1744388119308503

We share research for those who like to stay up-to-date with birth-related research and thinking. Yoga sequence - preparation for labour and birth using biomechanics 12/07/2021

Yoga sequence - preparation for labour and birth using biomechanics

There’s fantastic evidence that pregnancy yoga shortens labour and helps manage contractions, amongst other things.

Thrilled that RBH shared my video.

Feel free to share it with pregnant friends and colleagues.

As a birth educator, the advice to ‘go with the flow’ makes me really uncomfortable.

These mums are attempting to do a kind thing and manage expectations.

And there is a point where you need to surrender in labour to give the body the best chance of letting go. (This is a big subject that I cover in my book Pearls of Wisdom - the interplay of hormones, the need to find safety so that you can be vulnerable….)

BUT

If you advise someone to just go with it, it takes their agency away.

The more someone has read around labour and understands the factors influencing physiological birth within a medicalised system, the better chance they will have of not throwing their birth plan out the window.

Instead have MULTIPLE birth plans - eg Plan A is your ideal scenario, plan B if you are being advised to be induced, plan C if forceps/ ventouse suggested, plan D if a caesarean is on the cards….

As you and your birth partner find out information and discuss the birth plans you will be in a fantastic position to make informed choices.

Look into the impact that birth location has on the likelihood of intervention.

Read about pelvic balancing and biomechanics for birth.

This may all seem like a lot of work. But your birthing experience will be with you forever. It’s worth it!

And the decisions don’t stop at birth. You can see it as preparation for all the decision-making you’ll do in parenting!

My favourite places to recommend expectant parents to start is @drsarawickham website and @midwifethinking blog.

All birth choices are valid and to be respected, but please don’t feel you can’t have a massive impact on what happens.

That might feel daunting.

There is lots of support and information. Check out my free talk - https://womenswisdom1.teachable.com/p/the-body-in-birth

I know it can be daunting going to something new the first time.

40% of pregnant women said that they did not try exercising because they didn't want to go alone.* This is such a shame as exercising has so many benefits for the mum and baby's health.

So if you're feeling nervous, bring a friend. Book your ticket and email me to bring your friend for half price for their first class.

This coming Saturday we're having a social after class at a nearby cafe so it's a great time to come along and meet some other expectant mums.

Joey’s story - an excerpt about feminine strength

From my book: Pearls of Birth Wisdom. Different people get their support for labour from different places.

Just as we have become nuclear families, we tend to think of nuclear support for the labour - your significant other and the midwife! But for some, having more supporters around makes them feel safe. A difficult thing during the pandemic. See @kemibirthjoyjohnson’s account for examples of where this has not been possible.

You can order direct from me in the UK or through Amazon - see link in bio.

The body in birth - FREE talk 18/03/2021

The body in birth - FREE talk

How come in antenatal classes the part about the body - positions, how moving helps so much etc - is so brief? Birth is a physical process whatever kind of birth you have.
There's so much more focus on intervention, less on breathing and the nervous system and supporting your body in those ways.

How did this come to be?

If you missed the talk, you can watch it here (register for free access).

Why you need to know about labour and birth positions BEFORE labour

Photos from Yoga with Tessa's post 05/03/2021

I have now added full length classes to my online Mother & Baby Yoga course so once you're learnt some moves you can do a whole class.

In the real classes, there's often a baby or two sleeping so there are also options for if your baby is not with you.

https://womenswisdom1.teachable.com/courses/mother-baby-yoga

All for less than two teas and cakes.

25/02/2021

I'm giving a FREE talk on Saturday at 3pm: I'm a pregnancy yoga teacher and wonder more and more why being physically ready for birth is not addressed in antenatal appointments and many antenatal courses.
Labour and birthing is an undeniably physical experience, whether it's a vaginal or caesarean birth. I'll be talking a little bit about how we got to this place of being disconnected from the body in birth, and much more time on practical ways that you can support yourself through the birthing journey.

It's my passion to help women feel less anxious about birth by knowing more about their own bodies.
