š„ Donāt just slip ā step, load, respond.
Good striking isnāt simply about being able to avoid a shot. Itās about being able to move with purpose, create an angle and be ready to respond immediately.
In this drill, the foam stick represents a single incoming shot down the centre line. Rather than being restricted to one defensive response, the person striking has the freedom to move left or right, using a slip step to avoid the shot before preparing their counter.
So, what exactly is a slip step?
A traditional slip keeps your feet planted. You drop your weight, move your head off the centre line and essentially replace your head with your shoulder.
A slip step takes that movement one step further.
Instead of keeping both feet planted, you step with the outside foot in the direction you want to move while allowing the other foot to stay in place. As you step, you recoil the shoulder and upper body, helping you create the position and loading needed to respond efficiently ā
One of the benefits of the slip step is that it creates space for longer-range counters, such as the right hand, rather than limiting you to shorter-range responses like hooks or uppercuts. The additional movement can help you create the distance needed to fully extend and deliver a more effective counter. š
The aim is to develop:
ā” Reaction speed
š Visual recognition
š£ Footwork & movement
š„ Defensive positioning
š§ Decision-making
š„ Countering ability
The important part is that the movement isnāt just about getting out of the way.
Move with purpose. Create the angle. Create the space.
These drills are a great example of how we combine striking, movement, reaction and decision-making to make training both physically challenging and mentally engaging.
At CAIRO, we train more than just fitness ā we develop strength, fitness and mindset. š§

š„ Donāt just react ā read, decide, respond.
Good striking isnāt simply about having fast reactions. Itās about being able to recognise patterns, process information and make the right decision under pressure.
In this drill, the foam stick repeatedly travels down the centre line, encouraging the person striking to recognise it as a jab and then make an immediate decision ā left or right ā on how theyāre going to respond.
The aim is to develop:
ā” Reaction speedš§ Decision-making under pressureš Visual recognitionš„ Countering abilityš Adaptability and movement
As you start recognising what shots are coming your way, you can begin to make educated predictions about what might come next ā allowing you to prepare your response rather than simply reacting after the fact.
These drills are a great example of how we use movement, reaction and decision-making to make training both physically challenging and mentally engaging.
At CAIRO, we train more than just fitness ā we develop strength, fitness and mindset.

Footwork will always be the most importantāyet most overlookedāpart of your training. š„
Power, speed and technique all start from the ground up. Great footwork creates balance, improves timing, controls distance and puts you in the best position to attack, defend and counter. Even the most technically gifted fighters struggle if their feet arenāt in the right place.
In this clip, weāre working on a variation of the jab that we call the step jab.
Unlike a traditional jab, where you drive from the back leg, the step jab uses only the lead foot to step in. This can give you extra range while leaving enough space to follow immediately with a body kick.
With a traditional jab, stepping through with the rear leg naturally closes more distance. If your opponent hasnāt moved back and you donāt reset your distance after the punch, youāll often find yourself too close to land an effective kick. Considering your leg has a much greater range than your arm, understanding distance management is essential if you want your combinations to flow efficiently.
Sometimes itās the smallest technical adjustments that make the biggest difference.
Train with purpose. Master the fundamentals. The results will follow. š
Today, Coach Callum spent the morning at Quantum Careās Garden City Court Residential Care Home in Letchworth, successfully avoiding a barrage of javelins thrown by the residents... or at least doing his best! šš¹
Before every boxing session, we always include both a mental and physical warm-up to get everyone engaged, moving and smiling. This weekās mental challenge was one of our favourites, the Coloured Bean Bag Throw, encouraging concentration, coordination and a little friendly competition.
For the physical warm-up, we decided to get creative with a javelin throw... using pool noodles! š„³
Residents who were happy and able to stand threw their ājavelinsā from a fixed position, while those taking part seated completed the same challenge from their chairs. After each throw, we marked the landing spot with a cone, and once everyone had taken their turn, the longest throw was crowned our champion! š
Itās always amazing to see how a simple activity can bring so much laughter, confidence and togetherness. Exercise doesnāt have to be complicatedāit just needs to be inclusive, engaging and fun. Seeing everyone encouraging one another and celebrating each otherās successes is exactly why we love what we do.
Thank you once again to everyone at Garden City Court for another brilliant morning. We canāt wait to see you all again next time! ā¤ļø
