Wigan St Judes Golds 12-8 Swords

Swords headed to Wigan in a reverse of our last game pre summer break.

Isaac JM captained our side today viced by Dante as we reshuffled following the departure of Austin and Dan M being unavailable.

Unfortunately with a late withdrawal we could only field 12 against the Division 1 Leaders and Lancs Cup Finalists, playing a full match a man down was going to be a fight, but boy were they up for it.

This lit the fire of the remaining 12 and wow, what an unbelievable effort.

8-0 down after 5 minutes Swords dug in in what was a classic game of Rugby League, lots of big hits; never say die tackles and ongoing arm wrestle.

Before half time Orrin crossed from dummy half akin to Dan M who was unfortunately missing the match.

With 2 minutes to go Eddie crossed in the corner to level the scores at 8-8

The game restarted and the ball shot out of a tackle and Judes were awarded the ball from the scrum, they crossed at the death but that didn’t dampen what was a marvellous performance; what we’re using to from Swords, a game built on defence.

Chorley Panthers 6-38 Thatto Heath Shields 🛡️

Another road trip for the Shields boys & another well deserved win 💪🏻 In recent years Chorley have been a tricky opposition for the boys but this team now is playing at a level that the opposition just couldn’t live with.

Shields started well with solid defence, notably from Freddie, Bobby L & Callum. This allowed Shields good field position to attack in the opposition half & after a couple of efforts going close Freddie had the ball ripped from his grasp & Alfie reacted quickest to dive on the loose ball for the first try of the game, JB cooly added the extras 0-6.

Shields were now clicking & playing some attractive rugby moving the ball well with Noah S, Scott & Alfie to the fore. Freddie then took his opportunity to steam onto a pass from close range to score the 2nd try of the game, again JB converted with ease 0-12.

Shields was now playing with confidence & following strong carries by Jack J & Bobbie R Scott moved the ball out wide to Jakob who found the line for the 3rd try of the game, JB was unlucky with the conversion & the teams went in at half time with the Shields leading 16 nil.

With confidence brimming & the introduction of fresh hungry players, the Shields boys continued to apply the pressure, structured build up play led to Matty getting the ball out wide & it was his turn to get on the scoresheet, with a devastating longe range effort which was well backed up by Ben who declined Matty’s generous offer of a walk in try, fair play Ben 👏🏻 Olly slotted the extras, 0-22.

Chorley then had their moment in the game, when for about 5 minutes the Shields switched off in defence & the oppositions biggest player broke the line to race away, only for Scott to have other ideas heroically chasing him down & hauling him back on the try line. However despite some more strong defence Chorley then pulled a try back with a close range barge over, 6-22.

Smarting from conceding Shields answered in the best way possible, they unleashed a pitbull, namely Logan who picked his target & didn’t miss with the best tackle of the game, forcing Chorley to lose the ball & from the resulting plays Olly sliced through the defence to score a well taken try & then calmly added the extras, 6-28.

Olly then took his tally to 2 tries with a similar effort to his first, gliding & stepping his way through the line to slide in under the sticks & again converting with the boot, 6-34.

Fittingly the last try of the game went to Freddie, a real handful throughout the game & Chorley simply could not handle him, however this time Freddie showed he also has a turn of speed his dad would be jealous of, busting the line half way out & sprinting away from all would be defenders to slide in under the sticks, the conversion was narrowly missed & the full time whistle followed, Shields ran out convincing winners 6-38 & now have the Lancashire Shield Final firmly in their sights 👊🏻

Heysham Atoms 12 - 44 Thatto Heath Shields

With the summer break coming to an end, it was time to get back to rugby, and the Shields returned to action with a convincing 44–12 victory over Heysham Atoms.

Olly’s kick-off was allowed to bounce, giving Adam possession deep inside Heysham territory and putting Thatto immediately on the front foot. Just a couple of plays later, Freddie produced a trademark run, beating several defenders to cross for the opening try. Olly added the conversion.

In a real see-saw first half, Heysham responded with a close-range try following a penalty. Thatto hit back shortly afterwards, keeping the ball alive through several phases. Freddie once again swatted away multiple defenders before offloading to Bobby, who immediately found Matty. Matty raced over 40 metres to score beneath the posts, with Olly adding the extras.

Heysham responded again to bring the game back to within four points, but some excellent Thatto defence forced Heysham to kick from deep inside their own half. Olly collected the ball and raced down the right before being brought down just 10 metres from the line.

On the final play of the half, a beautifully executed cross-field kick was eventually collected by JB, who touched down in the corner. The conversion was narrowly missed.

If the first half had been a closely fought affair, the second half was anything but.

Thatto received the restart and, following two strong runs from Jack J, began to work their way upfield. The ball was shifted to the right, where Olly made a half-break before finding Scott, who in turn put Matty through for his second try of the afternoon beneath the posts. Olly converted.

Thatto continued to build momentum. A delightful face-ball from Alfie sent Matty racing clear once again, with Matty completing his hat-trick by scoring under the posts. Olly added another conversion.

Excellent defensive work from Thatto then forced a turnover inside Heysham’s 30-metre area. As Thatto edged closer to the line, Noah S found Scott, who produced a clever inside pass for Freddie to crash over for his second try. Olly converted.

Thatto continued to dominate from the restart, making good ground before a spiralling last-play kick from Olly was missed by the Heysham full-back. Alfie reacted quickest, chipping beautifully into the corner for Callum to collect and score. The conversion was missed.

From the resulting kick-off, Olly collected the ball and raced untouched down the right-hand side to score. He then converted his own try.

Heysham grabbed a consolation try with the final play of the game, but it was Thatto who deservedly took the points after an impressive second-half performance.
