Bit Fit Isn’t Just About the Mouth

A well‑fitted bit does more than simply avoiding causing pain.
It should sit correctly, complement your horse’s individual mouth conformation, and work in harmony with the bridle and the rider’s hands.

When the fit isn’t right, your horse will often tell you. Common signs include:
🐴 Tongue evasions
🐴 Reluctance to take a consistent contact
🐴 Tension through the jaw
🐴 Changes in rhythm, outline, or way of going

Correct bitting and bridle fit can have a huge impact on a horse’s comfort, communication, and overall way of going. The best bit and bridle fitters take the time to assess the whole picture, the horse’s mouth, head shape, way of going, and the rider’s needs, always with welfare at the centre of their work.

This award is about recognising knowledgeable, skilled professionals who fit with care and integrity. The independent fitters and specialists who explain their choices, avoid quick fixes, and prioritise comfort, clarity, and fairness for the horse.
