Evesham Autumn Head

The head season moved to the Avon on Saturday: 2,000m upstream at Evesham, with 175 crews from 17 clubs racing in three divisions. Pengwern raced eight crews, from a J16 single to a Masters eight, and came home with a win, three seconds and three thirds.

Division 1 gave us the win, in the Masters D/E doubles. Zach was sculling well as he came past the club and finished seventh of ten in the J16 singles, and our women’s Masters B/D double took third.

Our Masters C eight led Division 2 away at noon, looked the best it has, and lost narrowly to Bewdley.

In Division 3 our Masters quad was second to an Evesham crew with an average age over 70. Well rowed, Evesham. Our Masters F/G four had Stourport closing on them all the way up the course, and Stourport took the event.

Our two Masters B/C fours raced back to back and finished second and third, both behind Bewdley, who had beaten our eight as well.

The day had its firsts: David Rugman’s first head race, in one of those B/C fours, and Phoebe’s first race as a cox. Head coach Stew called it a massive step forward for every crew. Next up, Dee Autumn Head on Sunday 18 October.

Congratulations to everyone who raced in blue and yellow, and many thanks to all our coaches, especially Stew and Rosie, who coach our men’s crews. Rosie coxed on the day too, as did Phoebe, and Kim from Bewdley steered one of our B/C fours. Thanks to everyone who loaded and unloaded the trailer, and to Digger, who towed it to Evesham and back. Huge thanks to Evesham Rowing Club and every umpire, marshal and volunteer.

A weekend on the Severn, and why we need more coaches and coxes.

Saturday began in mist. Juniors and masters went out in everything from eights to single sculls, from early morning until early afternoon, while across the river the Quarry got ready for Shropshire Oktoberfest. Some members are understood to have continued their rehydration there well into the evening. One attended on strictly professional terms, as part of the security team that installed the CCTV, so footage exists. Sunday's video analysis was confined to the rowing.

Sunday was our club coaching day. Nine crews took part: three eights, a coxed four, a quad, two doubles and two single scullers. Each worked with a coach: on the water, on camera, into the clubhouse to watch it back, then out again to put it right. Every crew finished with an honest benchmark and a list of what to work on next.

Thank you to our coaches for the day, Shazza, Jim, Stew, Martyn, Annabel, Rosie, Claudia and John, who gave their Sunday to it, and to Mike, Glen, Rachel Black and Paul in the coxes' seats. They were paid in quiche.

Now the request. More crews wanted to take part than we could put on the water. The appetite was there. The coaches and coxes were not, and a day like this can only be as big as the number of people we have to coach and steer.

There is a list on the clubhouse noticeboard of twelve things that require no talent. Number twelve is "being open to coaching". Our members have that covered. What we are short of is people to do the coaching, and people to sit in the cox's seat.

Chester Long Distance Sculls

The head season opened on the Dee on Sunday, with more than 240 crews from 26 clubs, as far afield as Scotland and the Thames. Pengwern sent twelve, with more than sixty years between our youngest sculler and our oldest crew, and came home with two wins, five seconds and three thirds.

Floss took her first head race win in the WJ14 singles, by seven seconds. Angelo won the over-70s singles by eight-tenths of a second after almost 25 minutes of racing, and Digger pipped Mark by 4.4 seconds for second in the over-55s singles.

Sarah raced her first head in a single, against the clock with nobody else in her category, and covered 2.8km in under 17 minutes. She only took up rowing in May last year and went in at the deep end, in a double with London 2012 Paralympian Nick Beighton, who returned to rowing at Pengwern three years ago. Coached by Jason, formerly with South Africa's national para rowing squad, they won at City of Oxford Regatta earlier this year.

Huge thanks to Royal Chester Rowing Club, who welcomed adaptive rowers for the first time, and to every umpire, marshal and volunteer who ran three divisions down the Dee between breakfast and teatime.

As a result of Ross Regatta unfortunately being cancelled this year, Ironbridge Rowing Club invited us and Bridgnorth Rowing Club to join them in a fun mini regatta yesterday! It was such a great day with lots of scratch crews mixed around with all ages! Thank you Ironbridge!

We are making Pengwern Boat Club more accessible!

We are raising £15,000 to purchase and install an accessibility lift to the first floor of our clubhouse to allow our adaptive rowers socialise, and use facilities they would otherwise not be able to access.

What an incredible weekend for Pengwern! We have had a busy weekend with out club split. Some crews raced at Bridgnorth Rowing Club whilst others competed at the British Rowing Masters' Championships.

Pengwern brought home an astonishing 53 pieces of silverware! This includes 40 pots from Bridgnorth, and 13 medals from British Rowing Masters'! A very successful weekend. Well done to everyone who competed and thank you to the hosts of these events.

What a great regatta! The 2026 JTHughes Shrewsbury Regatta has unfortunately to come to an end. Entries were once again, completely full! Over 400 races happened over the 2 days and thousands of people came along to support throughout! Thank you to all members at Pengwern Boat Club for helping to set this up. Countless hours of planning has gone on behind the scenes!
