Following the recent river spates we've experienced recently , I was pleased to capture video of a Common Sandpiper and chicks this morning . The Sandpiper is a summer visitor to the Wharfe at Bolton Abbey and nests on the ground close to the river ,so it was pleasing to see this family had successfully evaded the recent high water .

Photos from Bolton Abbey fly fishing's post 07/04/2025

Having arrived late at the pool post 2pm and fearing I'd missed the hatch , I studied the headwater closely for sign of a feeding fish , thankfully it wasn't long till I noticed movement , without waiting and conscious that waiting would jeopardise my chance , I placed my fly carefully upstream of his location and readied myself for the take , the fly a Light Tan Klinkhammer was ignored I picked it up and placed it again .
This time the fish took the fly confidently ! Following a spirited fight for freedom the fish succumbed to the net , the Brown Trout was in pristine condition and after thanking the fish I Slipped it gently back to the river .
Grateful for the moment and the sense of connection to the natural world and blessed by warm spring sunshine , I tackled down .
