You might be forgiven for thinking the village of Muchelney was still underwater, even after the drought. But it is very much alive and thriving, and never more so than this evening.

Joe’s Bar in Muchelney is only open on Fridays, from 3pm until… well, whenever really. And tonight the various local c***r makers had their wares lined up ready to try.

A particular shoutout to Parrett C***r’s Farmhouse Sweet, which was sooo good. The Parrett C***r Company

But as much as the c***r was excellent, it was the round-the-table chat, the people coming and going and the dog being on top form that really made the evening.

Thanks Joe. You’ve created what can only really be described as a little slice of c***r heaven on the Somerset Levels.

Fyne Court

Tucked away in the Quantock Hills, Fyne Court is wonderfully wild, atmospheric and full of rather brilliant stories.

It was once home to Andrew Crosse, a pioneering electrician known locally as the “Thunder and Lightning Man.” He strung copper wire through the grounds and connected them to his music room. Read more on the National Trust website

The grand house itself was destroyed by fire but today you can wander through woodland, meadows and the remains of the old gardens and imagine just how extraordinary this place once was.

Definitely one for the Hidden Somerset list.

A big thank you to Georgie for offering to show me one of Stocklinch’s beautiful churches.

We walked out from Barrington, following the lanes through the countryside before arriving at the church, with far-reaching views across Somerset towards what I’m guessing was Ilminster.

Inside, it was wonderfully peaceful. Beautiful old Hamstone, little details everywhere and a stained glass window that I was particularly enamoured with, complete, I think, with apples.

Another one of those lovely little Somerset places I probably wouldn’t have discovered without someone pointing me in the right direction.

Well worth a wander if you’re exploring this very beautiful village.

After a few attempts this year, I have FINALLY found the monument to King Alfred… and, as an unexpected bonus, developed a pretty hardcore lust for the farmhouse next door. (Apologies for shaky camera work, two dogs on leads!)

I genuinely can’t stress enough how magical this little corner of Somerset is.

There are stories everywhere. Battles and kings, princess islands, overgrown forgotten cottages, wildlife, ancient landscapes and, alongside it all, new technology being used to understand and manage the floods.

Every path seems to lead to another story, another building, another bit of history I didn’t know was there.

I started this walk from Holly Farm Holiday Cottages in Stoke St Gregory and walked the river, railway and villages to Burrow Mump, took about 3 hours at pace. So a good days walk there and back. There is a pub King Alfred Inn under Burrow Mump which was unfortunately closed when I got there but there is also The Mump just down the road doing coffees.

I just want to walk it all.
