Yes, the water treadmill is another thing that costs money.
And yes, it is another service where someone says, “it could really help your horse.”
So it is fair to question it.

But also stop for a minute and ask yourself this.
How many things have you already tried to improve the issue?
How long have you been trying?
How many professionals, friends, yard opinions, saddle checks, physio visits, supplement tubs, schooling plans, vet chats or “try this” ideas have already been involved?

Sometimes the horse does not need another random thing added.
Sometimes it needs a structured way to build strength, posture, movement quality and consistency without relying on speed, circles, rider influence or hard ground.
That is where water treadmill work can be useful.

Hydrotherapy is not new. Water based therapy has been used in the medical field for years across people, horses and other species because water changes workload, resistance and loading. Remember how we all know of a racehorse taken to the seas, a friend who has needed to rehab another riding injury in the pool...

But the important bit is not just having access to a treadmill.
It is how it is used.
Water height, speed, duration, frequency, confidence, fatigue and the horse’s wider programme all matter.

That is also why horses here are not simply put into the same sort of programmes.
Gemma’s background not only as a hydrotherapist but in rider and equine biomechanics, rehabilitation and sport focused exercise and movement analysis all influence how each horse is worked and progressed.

Working in water slows the movement down enough that many horses can no longer simply rush through the stride using momentum alone.
The horse has to organise itself more deliberately.

Which is why so much focus is placed on:
• rhythm
• tempo
• balance
• consistency
• posture
• straightness

All those words coaches repeat constantly suddenly start to matter even more.
Because strength is not just about power.
It is about how consistently the horse can organise the movement correctly.

The same treadmill can be a brilliant tool or a fairly pointless expensive walk, depending on how it is applied.

So no, it is not magic.

But used properly, it can be one of the most useful tools for horses needing controlled strengthening, rehab support, improved movement quality or a sensible return to work.

Sometimes you know exactly what your horse needs, but fitting it around work, travelling and yard jobs is the impossible bit.

Our rehab or performance livery means we can take care of your horse, complete their treadmill or arena sessions and keep the programme consistent while they are here.

With over 20 years experience coaching and performance horses, Gemma can also plan their arena work around the same goals, so everything joins up rather than the treadmill sitting separately from the rest of their programme.

Tailored livery stays at The Hydro & Therapy Centre can suit rehabilitation, return to work, fitness building, weight management or a short focused training spell before a competition when life is simply too busy.

You still stay involved in the plan, but you do not have to make every journey and squeeze in every job yourself.

Why can deeper water be so useful?

This view gives us a brilliant look at what is happening through the front of the horse, including shoulder movement, how the forelimbs lift and reach forward and how the water influences the whole stride.

Deeper water works far more than just the hocks and stifles. The buoyancy supports the horse while the resistance asks for more effort through the whole body. It can encourage greater joint movement, help recruit the core and postural muscles, work the thoracic sling and add useful strength through the back and hindquarters.

That combination of support and resistance is what makes water height such a useful part of rehabilitation, conditioning and performance work.

One session can certainly be useful, but strength and fitness aren’t built in one visit.

Like ridden training, the water treadmill works best when it is used in a consistent plan and progressed as the horse gets stronger.
That doesn’t mean making every session longer, faster or deeper either.

Sometimes progress is seeing the horse maintain a better rhythm, stay straighter or cope with the same work more easily.
Small improvements add up, but it never fails to amaze us and owners how quickly the results usually show compared to the ridden time.

First treadmill session doesn’t mean straight in with loads of water and a hard workout!

The first job is letting the horse understand the treadmill, find their rhythm and become comfortable with the water and movement underneath them.
Some walk in like they have done it all their life. Others need a little more time to work it out.

There is still plenty we can learn from that first visit, but confidence and a relaxed walk come before trying to increase the workout.

Just the same as "they have the scope to jump 1.20m but you don't start there"

Want to see how your horse takes to it first sessions are usually around 10-12mins and max of fetlock height if they are up to it.

We also have excellent budget friendly Taster Sessions for £20

One of my favourite views on the treadmill.

Looking over the horse’s back lets us see how the muscles are moving, whether the back is swinging evenly and how that movement changes during the session.
We want to see the horse moving through their body, not just marching away with four busy legs underneath them.

This is also why we don’t simply choose a water height, set the timer and let them just walk. We watch the horse from every angle throughout and adjust the session around what they show us, which is often A LOT!

The water treadmill isn’t only for rehabilitation.

It can also be used alongside ridden work for fitness and conditioning, core and postural strength, suppleness, weight management, young horse development and carefully controlled work for older horses.

It isn’t there to replace good riding or correct training. It gives us another useful way to work the horse’s body and add variety without simply doing more of the same.

Every session is still chosen around the individual horse, their current work and what we are trying to achieve.

What are we actually watching while your horse is on the treadmill?
Not just whether they are picking their legs up!

I’m watching their rhythm, straightness, foot placement, how evenly they use both sides and whether anything changes as the session progresses.

Sometimes the best decision is to increase the water or incline.
Other times it is to leave everything exactly where it is and allow the horse to settle into the work.
It’s never just a case of pressing start and letting them walk.
