Did you know that Gayle and April have been body therapists since the 90’s 😱 (we know they don’t look that old 😉) and have and have been teaching in private and FE education for over 20 years?
They have many different qualifications in massage and wellness therapies as well as specialist training in assessment and quality assurance. So to say they are experienced is a bit of an understatement.
They also only work with therapists they have personally vetted and trained.

This month at Sustain Therapy we’ve had lots of clients in that are training for the London Marathon- and for many of them its their first time. With the increased popularity of plant based food diets, and more and more people taking part in events such a Veganuary, are we to assume that this is healthier than an omni diet?
Well Yes, and No.
Whilst consuming more legumes, fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts and reducing consumption of refined carbohydrates is beneficial to your gut health and can help reduce incidence of cardiovascular diseases, there is a rising trend of ‘vegan junk food’ available. These are often full of sugars, saturated fats, starches, additives, which include emulsifiers colorings, and stabilizers, which increase our risk of poor health outcomes associated with the use of these foods. These are referred to as ‘ultra processed’ foods and consumption should be limited.

Are you consuming enough fibre?

Most of us need to eat more fibre and have fewer added sugars in our diet. Eating plenty of fibre is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer. Government guidelines say our dietary fibre intake should increase to 30g a day, as part of a healthy balanced diet. As most adults are only eating an average of about 20g day, we need to find ways of increasing our intake (NHS, 2022).

Here are easy 3 ways you can increase your fibre intake:

🌈Why should you Eat the Rainbow?

Did you know that the majority of your immune system is located in your gut? And theres a direct link between the brain and the gut? 🥦Eating a diet that is rich in colourful fruits and vegetables, plant based foods such as nuts/seeds/legumes, and fermented foods such a yogurt, kombucha, kefir can all help increase the diverse range of good bacteria vital to a healthy gut. Many plant-based foods also contain polyphenols which are not easily absorbed through your intestines, so they move along your gut to the large intestine, where most of your gut bacteria live. Here, microbes feed on polyphenols and in the process, convert them into a variety of bioactive compounds. Other foods rich in polyphenols include dark chocolate (85% and over), coffee (including decaf) and 🍷.

Studies show that an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut microbiome may affect your emotions thus playing a role in ANXIETY and DEPRESSION. This means the foods we eat such as ultra processed foods and sugar could be making us feel worse, as well as increasing our chances of pre diabetes, heart disease, cancer and weight gain (to name but a few).
